Temp Gauge Installation
 
Hi all, Happy Thanksgiving....

I will be as short as Possible..........................

73' 914 ( 3.2 Conversion ) Factory DME unit with Steve Wong chip, running headers with M&K Sport Muffler/Super Trapps...also Patrick Motorsports wiring harness...

Also PMS front mounted Oil Cooler.

There is quite abit of "Original" 914-6 components on the Car aswell as complete 911 SC
suspension and brake system.....

Turn Key Outlaw purchased in July....

My Combo gauge is an original 914-6 unit....after delivery of the 914 and subsequent driving pleasure upper 80's mid 90's amb.Temp I noticed my Temp Gauge never left the very bottom marker on the unit...which surprised me...thinking the unit was faulty or just Old...

Fuel level indicator worked, Parking Brake indicator worked, Oil level indicator worked Amp indicator worked....

But I just had gut concerns going forward that Oil Temp was not being accurately monitored, additionally there was no Druc Pressure measurement in the Combo


So I purchased a new "Separate" VDO Oil Temp and VDO Oil Pressure gauge mounted under the ash Tray....

And had them installed by my Porsche Tech....

Both units are backlit and the Oil Pressure appears to work well...the needle moves upon Start-up and changes position at Idle or Under acceleration ....

The Temp Gauge is also backlit which is easy to see....BUT the needle never changes position from the bottom left side of the Unit...Interval markings are
120/180/220/260 /300 F....my needle never reaches the 120F marking even after an hour Driving Highway or City....

I checked in with my Porsche Tech and alerted him...

Because I am running the Oil Cooler this is Normal....?????

under 120F ???? ( my Oil Cooler must be one Hell of a Heat Exchanger)

#2 He said the Temp Unit is wired directly to the DME Unit ??? I found that interesting and curious...thought it would have been on Hardware directly in Contact with the Engine Oil....

So that's where I am ...Car runs like a Bear and I am very satisfied with the performance...Maybe I am just being an overprotective Anal Engineer ...with the obsessive Focus always on adequate Cooling and Lubrication....

PS can anyone give me their thoughts on this Subject...I have "abit" of Drone in the Cabin from the Exhaust System ....will "wrapping the Headers" reduce this phenomenon ....???

Charles, the first step is to get an infrared temperature gun and use it to check the temperatures of areas such as the oil tank and bottom of the crank case to compare that with what you are seeing on the gauge(s).

There is no way that the stand alone, new VDO gauge is wired into the DME unit - they are very simple instruments that have a sending unit mounted somewhere on the engine (wiring running from the sender to the gauge), and a keyed/switched power supply. I doubt that the OEM 914-6 unit runs through the DME either, but am not familiar with it so can't say for certain.

If the oil temp is really not going above 120, then that is a real problem as it needs to be above 180F (210-220F being the sweet spot) to adequately burn off oil contaminates such as water, excess fuel, etc., in a timely fashion. So if your tech thinks that is "normal", then he does not know what he is talking about. :)

Try using a different oil temp sender , sounds like the sender and gauge are mismatched

The oil temp sender will have a maximum temp number stamped on it. 120C, 150C, etc. That needs to match the max temp range on the gauge, if you use the 911 or 914 gauge.

I'm not sure I would continue to use that tech.

These engines can run pretty cool if the outside air temp is very low.

Wrapping the headers won't fix the droning issue.
