It may be a heck of a piece of history, and a great crowd pleaser. But what are you going to do with it? $20K? I'd rather have the silver S Targa...but I'm prejudiced. BTW, back in May, I drove past the spot where James Dean died. I was in my Porsche, but felt absolutely no otherworldly presence.

Are there that many people around any more that even care about James Dean?

I had read most of this in Road & Track ( I think) a few years ago, but it's still fascinating. I visited the scene of the accident a couple of years ago. But as I was on my Harley-Davidson, I can't say I felt any Porsche-related mojo. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website "If it ain't broke...we'll help you fix it 'til it is!" |

Are there many people that still care about James Dean?!? Yes!! He's a part of American history, one of the things that makes us unique in the world. Elvis, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Rock and Roll, baby, the boulevard of broken dreams.
I recently read a story about a customer that had a Gibson Les Paul built by the custom shop, with wood stained to match the color of Marilyn Monroe's nipples! People go crazy over this stuff. |

James Dean is still pretty big stuff around here (California Central Coast). There's a little memorial near the site of the accident, tended by a Japanese fan who still keeps it looking good. At the end of September, the faithful caravan to the spot and leave flowers, tell stories and imagine what Dean might have done to miss the oncoming Ford.
For a few years in the late 80's I organized a Porsche Club event that involved a group of us leaving Monterey early in the morning, heading south through the Salinas valley toward Paso Robles. I even made a cassete tape with Dean lore and songs that, when started at the right moment, finished the story telling just as the driver pulled up to the memorial at Jack's Ranch Cafe. It was a lot of fun but as I look back on it, way too much work. There is something about driving a Porsche through the intersection of old 446 and route 41 that is strangely compelling. To those who don't care, I'm sure it sounds odd, guess you have to be there. Sometimes I do wonder where the rest of the car is. Maybe it's better this way. It's probably a bunch of Coke cans by now anyway. Bruce Herrmann |
