Oil breather hose

Why is the oil breather hose 1" ID?

I would like to clean up the engine bay.

If I put a reducer in there and used 1/2" hose what could possibly go wrong?

It depends on the condition of your engine and how much blow-by it has.

Not sure I'd worry about looks in this case.

My guess is that the long, large ID hose also functions as an oil separator. Large ID means low velocity air air from the crankcase to the intake, which gives a chance for oil vapor to "drop out" and run back to the crankcase (rather than pull a lot of oil vapor which may foul the intake).
