Replacing carpet - coupe vs. cabrio
 

I'm looking at an 87 cabrio which might need new carpeting. I've replaced the carpet in my 72 coupe and it wasn't such a big deal that I wouldn't tackle it again. Would an 87 cabrio by a much more difficult job?

No it is quite doable. In fact I had the roof off at the time and that gave me much better access.
The only thing I found is that some of the carpet pieces were not entirely accurate.

Make sure you get a cab/targa kit as they differ from the coupe. Should be easier as you can lower the top during install. I got mine from APPBIZ. I used the RS kit to save a little weight. The driver side will wear quickly at the heal as they are very thin. I covered them with coco mats, prolly negated the weight savings.:rolleyes:

What about the door pocket pieces? Are those any harder than the rest of it? They didn't have those back in 72 :). Do the kits even come with them?

I bought the kit for the 72 from appbiz, but I think they only sell the rs style. I'm not sure if I want that or the regular style - haven't decided yet.

Door pockets are maybe the trickiest part, but not that bad. Search youtube for a Lakewell how to video.

You'll need carpet glue, 3M has a good product. Other questions best to ask the seller.

I was able to replace the carpet in my cab. The most difficult part was removing the seats as a couple of the bolts stripped and I had to drill them out.

I agree that a few pieces didn't seem to fit exactly. I was going to change the carpet on the door pockets and then realized it would be easier to replace the door panels with RS panels.

The piece for the centre console from shifter to coupler access plate is a bit off on mine. If you center the trim for the seat rails, the slot for the handbrake is off.

It is an appbiz rs kit. I will fiddle more, i am just now test fitting a few of the more key parts.

Looks like most people get he Appbiz kits. Mine is from them as well; I got the Sliverknit carpet because it is what was in the car originally.

The door pockets are ok, and not difficult to do. I used the 3M FoamFast 74 glue, and found that 2 cans should be enough.

The piece over the tunnel is indeed a bit off, and I would like to re-do that part. The other pieces that really did not work out were the two pieces that cover the top gearboxes, they were simply too small.
Also the Sliverknit pieces that are not glued don;t have a backing; the original Porsche carpets seem to have more body and hold their shape better.

My current frustration is that I would like to buy a few pieces of carpet to finish the work but Bob has gone AWOL (again!). I sent him a few emails but no response. Does anyone know another source for a few sqm of black Sliverknit?
