Part two: Are these voltmeter readings normal?
Thank you upfront for any advice or suggestions. You will see the backstory here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/890840-these-voltmeter-readings-normal.html
OK, since the red battery light was lit when I turned the key “on”, and stayed lit when I started the car, it collaborated with the 12.4V at the cigarette lighter voltmeter. The stats I now have: -1983 911 SC -Battery is disconnected and charged, indicating 13.6V -I removed the alternator once again, installed new voltage regulator, had it retested. It indicates 14V -14-pin (blue wire) has no corrosion -Checked battery cables, good clean connections, good earth -New transmission to body earth strap What I’m struggling with now, is that I’m at the point of reinstalling the alternator. I’d love to run a test wire from the D+ and D- on the alternator to the POS/NEG on the battery, but once it’s installed, there is no access. Is there anything else I need to look over prior to reinstalling the alt? If the battery is good, and the alternator is good, it must be wiring somewhere, and it doesn’t seem overly complicated, just challenging to test. |
Only other thing I can think of is to make sure the alternator ground strap has a good connection. It goes from the engine, directly below the alternator, to the 8 o'clock (as you look forward from the bumper) alternator mounting stud, secured with one of the six nuts. You can check continuity of the wiring to the battery using a test light in the engine compartment. Good luck!

looking at your old post it looks like you pinched the wire between the alt and the fan housing.
you also got part of the blue wire. you could check the resistance of the wires to the alt to ground. i really doubt you burned anything up other than the alt, i would jsut put it in and see what happens. like captain ron (just watched the movie) said, if anything is going to happen it will happen at sea. |
Targalid, one interesting note is that my car does/did not have an alternator ground strap. I have driven the car ~15K since purchase with the alternator working until this event. I have purchased a strap from our host.
T77911S, I replaced the entire VR; didn't repair the pinched wires. The alt has checked good for 14V. I appreciate your input. I am open to any other thoughts as I work through this. |
you really need to stop opening threads on the same subject/problem.
glad you fixed it. |
