Engine tin mod for better cooling - how much does it help??
Per Wayne's engine rebuilding book (purchased from this website), it is suggested to modify the engine tin, parts #14 of mid year cars to allow for better cooling. As much as 10 -15 degrees better. Anyone done this and were the results as advertised? Of course I found this after my tin had been powder coated.
The width is pretty clear, cannot tell for sure where they are measuring from on the bottom. Anyone able to clarify? Thanks http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449089449.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449089468.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449089485.jpg |
Well the factory did this. My 82 sc came stock with the trimmed sheet metal.
So I'm thinking Porsche knows the answer. And they say trim the sheet metal. So no data, just using what the factory did. |
I've been doing it for years, it is a known improvement on the mid year cars. How would doing the trim hurt anything.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I have a recently acquired 1977 and wanted to know how would I remove the center tins to see of this has been done? Do I have to remove the heat exchangers to remove these?

Yes. Heat exchangers would have to come out. They are pretty difficult to get out without removing the oil return tubes too. If the tubes are leaking, I suppose it's a good excuse to change them out with expandable ones. I would try to get a look at them from the top of the engine by removing the alternator fan and shroud.

The tin goes on before the oil tubes. They are trapped
If you go to collapsible oil tubes, you still need to get under the fan shroud to remove the clips that hold them in place. IMHO leave them alone until the engine is rebuilt. |
