I need help with the front clip
Hi all,
I'm deep into the front end, having taken a break from the floor. I'm a bit stuck after having replaced the front belly pan. That went smoothly, but I then cut out the front cross panel, which had been replaced for the later model. Fortunately for me, the correct replacement hood came with the car. My problem is in locating the placement of the cross panel, especially with regards to the side panels. Here is a photo of the current state of the side panels: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449092075.jpg And here is how I placed the front cross member: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449092137.jpg What I don't get is that I see the upper lip of the front cross member located below the edge of the side panel. Also, some of the pics I see have a different front end altogether, like the one from Blee's rust bucket restoration, where does the piece circled in red come from? And does the front cross piece go behind the lip of the side panels?? I'm lost... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449092778.jpg Please help! Dario here's the main build thread, I'll post progress soon: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/863768-thats-my-first-911-restoration-thread-72-911-s-back-grave-maybe.html On the good side, I tried fit the donor hood and side panel, and things line up pretty nicely. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449092881.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449092961.jpg |
That little piece you circled is called the "angle plate for front wheelhouse" in the Restoration Design catalog. I didn't check the PP catalog, but I bet it's available here too! There are separate right & left pieces.
My '69 tub is currently parked at the sandblasters shop, otherwise I'd take a photo for you - I will in a couple of days when I get it back if necessary. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449102800.jpg |
Just found a photo of the front left corner. Again, I can take better photos after I get it back from the media blaster in a few days...

Hi Tom,
Thanks a lot, it looks like I have it wrong, and that I need to put the front piece behind the lip of the inner fender. That also makes sense, as they would have welded the bumper reinforcement plate last. A picture of where the front piece joins the inner fender at the top would be very helpful to see how that is supposed to fit. Maybe someone else will chip in with that info, but it will be nice to see what your tub looks like once it's nice and clean. Now that's a nice x-mass present! |

Stopped by the media blaster to check on progress and took a few photos for you of the front right corner. This car has a lot of swiss cheesed areas! Hope they help!

florio,
Would you like additional pics of my '68s front end? or are Tom's enough?-Matt |
Wow, did I have it wrong! Thanks a lot, Tom, the pictures really help. I think I'm set now, thanks also to Matt for willing to help out. I'll post pics of the repair on the resto thread once I get it done. I'm so glad I asked, can you imagine the comments once repaired backwards? Errr...
