Windshield washer relay??
1986 Carrera coupe, 300k miles
I'm trouble shooting my windshield wipers and washers and cannot get the washer pump to work. I removed the wiper switch on the column, cleaned it well and got the wipers working again. Switch looked good just grimy. Three speeds plus three wipes when activating the washer but no water. The intermittent switch and intensive washer works as do the headlight washers. The washer pump beside the battery makes noise when jumped to 12v but I get no water to the windshield. Before I remove the fluid reservoir to check for a blocked tube I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something else. I have seen references to a relay for the pump but the Bentley wiring diagrams don't show one. Is there a relay for this pump? Or maybe a stuck check valve, in spite of the working intensive system? Can I test by pulling the output tube from the pump and blowing air through the line? Can the same be done to clear the uptake tube in the tank by blowing air through the input tube at the pump or is there a check valve between the tank and the pump? Thanks, Gordon |

On the 82 that relay is behind the left dash gauge. My understanding those lines generally get clogged in the "T" fittings.

When I troubleshot my windshield washer system I bought about 10 ft of hose and by passed the Lines from the reservoir and going to the sprayers. Jumped the pump with 12volts and had water flow from a bucket to another bucket. Next I hooked the reservoir back in circuit. Water flowed from reservoir. Eventually found a clogged check valve in the line. Don’t know the the setup on a 86 model but the 1980 window washer pump runs off the momentary contact on the wiper stalk and does not have a relay for the pump.

I thought my relay was bad, but i saw 12v at the pump when I tested it, so, I rehabed my washer system as follows:
1) remove pump, remove cover, clean out gunk and bench test until it spins freely again. 2) with a bicycle pump, pressurize (GENTLY) the washer pump system, and the check valves eventually un-gummed themselves. Then, I'd cycle between bike pump, and washer pump to keep washer fluid in the system. it's worked great ever since.
