Question installing nut plates for front sway
 

Any reason not to weld them on the outside of the inner fender with the nutserts facing in. As opposed to trying to fish them in behind the fuel tank and line the bolts up? Thoughts?

You could weld the nuts in but I think it would be better to get a support plate which already has the nuts on it.

Higher HP stiffer cars will crack that area of the tub unless reinforced. Usually it's reinforced with a sizable second piece of sheet to spread load. It seams that welding on the relatively small sway bar plate might make things worse ....brittle metal right where the whole thing flexes. And a harder repair if it does crack.

It's so easy to install, why bother?

As ducman suggested, it would put too much stress on the small welds you'd be making to attach the nut or nut plate to the outside of your tub. Much better off putting the nuts or better off a reinforcing plate on the inside.

Thanks. I have the tarrett nut plates. Just haven't done one of these before and wanted to see if the design Es to help those who can't weld or if there was a better reason for the design. I'll go ahead and install as directed. Thanks!

pull the tank out & do it right.

I think I can sneak in there and do it with the tank in place, just a PITA on the drivers side. Hmm, I wonder if my 3.5 year old daughter can get her hands in there...

Hook the plate on the end of a length of coat hanger. Once you get it close, hold it in place with your finger through the hole you drilled for the sway bar, start one bolt to hold it in place, start a second bolt through the bushing for the sway bar that goes on the outside and remove the first, then install the remaining two bolts. No need to remove the tank at all. I've done this several times.
