cam housing/tower 901.105.111.0R vs 901.105.111.1R
Curious,
I know these are casting numbers. 901.105.111.0R is a 3 bearing housing, 901.105.111.1R is a 4 bearing housing if I understand correctly. Does anyone know when the switch over was made? How much of an upgrade is the 4 bearing housing, assuming it can be used on earlier cars? This would be for a 1976 'go to church on Sunday mornings' car. Thanks Edit: I have searched Pelican, and could find nothing specific, but it looks like 1978 or 1980 was the changeover??? PET shows the same part number for 1974-1977 2.7 cars, which I assume would be the 3 bearing version. 3.0 has a separate part number. The 1978-1983 PET shows cars use the same part number as the earlier 3.0 motor.

I think all of the 3 liter cars have the four bearing cam housing. So, 1975 for the turbo, 1976 for the Carrera 3.0, 1978 for the 911SC, etc.

Not sure what you are trying to do, but there is some discussion here. 4 bearing cam in 3 bearing 911 cam tower

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys.
What I am trying to figure out is what I have, see pics. These are 4 journal housings. Does the '76' indicate casting year? What does the '5' mean? Are they for the Carrera 3.0 or something different? Finally, what are they worth? They came off a hacked on 2.7 and I think the journal size is the same as 2.7l cams. Thanks again. ![]() ![]()

There were some special or odd cam housings at some point.
Ask over in the rebuild forum.

Thanks again for the reply. I will do as you suggest and post something over on the rebuild forum. Any thoughts on the '76', seems I have seen other posts stating about the year being stamped on parts.

The 4 bearing cams have a larger bearing so they don't slip into the 3 bearing housing. The 3.0 cams needed more clearance for the lobes to install in the housing. 901 part numbers were used into the SCs for quite a while as things run over, another example 1988 Carrera has 964 prefix on the cam carriers.

I looked at my Carrera 3.0 engine and that's the casting number for the cam carrier on mine. The part number shows to be the same for the Carrera 3.0, turbo, 911SC and Carrera 3.2, so I assume the casting number would be the same for all of those engines. If that's the case, there are a bunch of them out there, so it's not going to be worth a bunch. What it might be worth, I have no idea.
I'd bet that the "76" is a casting date. I can't verify what mine is with the engine installed in the car. JR |
