no early cars?

Granted I haven't seen any of these in person, but a buddy of mine is considering a 911 or 912 and just did a quick search:

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/3/6/37200636.htm

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/3/0/37127230.htm

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/1/2/37197212.htm

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/0/4/37147004.htm

That begs another question. How come more R-gruppe types don't start with 912s?

Glad you added the "more" comment...there is a fairly quick '69 912 on the R Gruppe roster. If you're nice, Jack or somebody might post a pic...

Did anyone say there were NO early cars? There are. There are early cars that are restored and worth at least $13k (for a T) and up, and there are early cars that look good but in reality, need a restoration that you will have about $20-$25k into when you are done.

That first 69E you show a link to? WOW, the car has had a $5,000 rebuild? $5k???? On a 33 year old, MFI car? It's $1500 just to rebuild the mfi pump and throttle bodies. $2500 for labor. Do you see where I am going with this. The owner of that car probably wasted $5,000 on a half-arsed rebuild that will need to be re-done the right way and probably sooner rather than later. A real, pro rebuild would probably easily be $8,000 on the motor, and what about the trans?

I am fairly new to Pelican, but I notice this strange need for the SC guys to jump in on early car threads and chime in about the rarity and value of the early cars. Of course they seem to always feel the early cars aren't THAT rare and aren't worth THAT much. Gee, I wonder why?

Traderonline always has a good selection of early 911's, along with the pre '67 beetles, 914's, 2002's and Alfa GTV's I'm always "looking for." The 356 selection lately seems thin.

Now you just need to find a few in Jersey and I'll be all set.

Early 911's, 2002's and Alfa GTV's are three of my all-time favorite affordable cars too. It's a good thing none of those are prone to rusting huh Tod?

Me too and me too (I considered an Alfa instead of the 02 for racing).

I think we need to make a distinction between 'early cars' and 'good early cars'. That's where the arguments start. One person's idea of, for example, a "no-rust" early car is not the same as mine. Case in point: the first advert linked here is described as a "no rust" car!!

I'm sure that Krylon primer sprayed on the fenders and hood had nothing to do with any rust problems .....

now now boys...cool your jets. You're reading way too much into my post. My buddy and I were talking about him looking (again) for an early 912 or 911, and next thing you now he's shooting me link after link via IM. I was reminded about how many cars there are around here.

That being said, I have often argued that despite the number of cars in SoCal, finding a *good* one is a challenge. But for those looking for one a bit rough around the edges (either to get on the cheap, to restore, or for R-gruppe activities), they are around. Mostly I was wondering my more people don't mod 912s. Seems like they tend to be cheaper, and if you're going to drop another motor in, the rest of the bits are the same.

btw, count me in the 2002 (and 3.0cs) fan club...especially round tail lights. I assume you guys have checked out: http://www.2002ad.com

Its a 912, and will stay one. However, I am considering a color change.

I thought all the 912 bits weren't the same - and that was why converting a 912 to a 911 was cost prohibitive. The suspension in particular (I thought) was different.
