Alternator Internal Regulator question
Has anybody actually converted an external regulated alternator to internal regulated? Not just an alternator swap, but actually done the work yourself? Are the parts available and what is the part numbers.
|
I did. The 3.0 I rebuilt for my 904 had an externally regulated alternator. Pelican sells the correct internally regulated alternator. I had to make a slight modification to the alternator shroud or what ever you call the thing that bolts to the back of the alternator.

The back of the alternator goes from 4 wires to 3 wires on the harness. The 4 th black wire gets taped off. Like mReid said the hub extension has to be trimmed to allow clearance of the voltage regulator. Remove the VR from the wall panel, leave the connector hang.
You need the fan housing with the 19 mm back that the alternator sets to, 75 and later housing. Bruce |
I have done plenty of conversion swaps, but has anybody actually done a conversion to the alternator themselves?

Alternator basic metal structure was changed to accommodate the internal VR. |
Sorry, James, I completely misread your question. I got nothing on the real question.

Other than saving a few pieces of wire, what's the advantage of an internally regulated alternator on a 911 type engine? As the voltage regulator can go bad, it's much easier to swap out an external voltage regulator than having to pull the alternator to replace one. Also, I'd imaging the external ones are running in a cooler environment which should help their longevity.

If the failure is the VR, just replace with a solid state, transistorized one. If the alternator has failed, not atypical, then replace with all-in-one. |
