NoVA Pelicanheads - Another loaner - Strut removal/inatallation tool?!

NoVA folks...anyone out there have the strut insert removal tool. I have the Boge housings and the original insert is still installed. I'd like to remove it so can continue cleanup of misc. suspension pieces prior to sending them off for painting. I have not oreded my new inserts yet, so the tool is not on the way Again, I'd be willing to come pick up this evening and return tomorrow....pending snow Of course I'd be willing to compensate as well.

Now for the update:

I removed the rest of the suspension this afternoon (struts housings, a-arms, Al crossmember, and sway bar....boy does it look naked The trickiest so far was removing the ball joint from the strut housing. I used a pickle fork to seperate the two (same tool used to seperate the tie rods).

I have not been able to find the ball joint tool locally. I even drove out to College Park last night hoping Porsche Bob may have one...no luck. Chuck, I found the tool you mentioned that is used to remove bearings from 4x4's but it was a little too large in diameter and did not fit well and slipped off too easily. Looks like I will have to used the dremel and start hacking away, should be easier now that I have the a-arms on the work bench.

I found that drilling many holes into the rubber bushings on the a-arms is an easy way to seperate the joining pieces. Knife and fire will do the rest once they are seperated.

Its amazing how much work can be accomplished when you have all day to play

Charlie,

Are you looking for a tool to take the top cap off the strut to remove the cartridge? If so, use a large pipe wrench. Thats what I did, worked great. If that is not what you mean by a "strut insert removal tool", nevermind .

Hope this helps. If not give a little more detail on what your looking for.

I'm starting to think these 'special' tools are not that special.

Thanks Jeff, I'll give it a try.
