Hi!
New 911 owner in AZ here. It's an '86 without the original exhaust system and no catalytic converter. I need to get it ready for emissions. Any helpful suggestions are welcome! Thanks! 86CC |

If you live in the town of Phoenix or Tucson you could try denatured alcohol. A bad person would get the tank very low, add the alcohol and then go to emissions. Pass, and then fill the tank with gas to dilute it. I, of course, would never do this, but you could, if you were a bad person.... DIY: Can't Pass Emissions? Thank goodness for denatured alcohol...

They will check to see if a cat is installed. So you're gonna need to bolt one on at least temporarily. Unless you can register it outside metro Phoenix or Tucson as SOAZ suggested.

Insure it with one of the collector car insurers like Hagerty. Then change the titling/registration to reflect its collector car status and it will be exempt from emission testing. I found easier to work with one of the franchise titling services rather than the Motor Vehicle Department. The insurance company will notify the MVD when you purchase the insurance. Hagerty calls their insurance classic rather than collector and it was necessary for Hagerty to fax a letter to the titling service explaining that their "classic" was indeed "collector" insurance. Worked for me with my '88 911.

Definitely do the collector insurance, you don't have to do emissions with that coverage.
I did do testing this past year for my SC, no visual test. Even with the aftermarket exhaust you may be just fine. Worst case scenario is you do not pass the test!

If you are in Phx call DJ at Jacksons Porsche (indy aircooled shop) and he can analyze your emissions and will tell you if you'll pass....he can tune it to pass more than likely as is.
OTOH, just get collector car insurance and you're exempt.

Insure and register it as a collector car. I did this with Hagerty insurance and had no problem with the MVD as was stated earlier. Another benefit of registering as a collector car is a 5'year registration.

They will check for CAT, but have no idea what it looks like. I have run through with CAT bypass, won't pass on HC%. Buy or borrow CAT and install for test, then do 2 year registration.

My 1979 3.0 911SC with Fabspeed cat bypass and muffler.....has passed visual every year for the past 10 years...the obvious stuff like air pump and or EGR if missing will probably get noticed...on my CIS, I lean it out a tad and bump up the rpm by 800...My HC and CO% have never failed...oh and make sure the car is really warmed up and at temp!
