Engine lid stuck!!
 

Hey all!

Just got back from a great drive to Palm Springs and back; took the wife out for some shopping and got a chance to stretch the SC's legs out a bit.

When we got back home I decided to check the oil before coming in. Drove about 80-90 mph most of the way and oil temps were great. Got out of the car and gave the engine release a tug...sometimes it needs a second tug...check to see if the lids up...third tug...twist, fourth tug...arrrgh, fifth tug. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/shake.gif

Gave up and turned the ignition off, decided to go in and check the Bentley and Haynes manuals before I go and break something more than it already is. Bentley showed how to release a stuck front hood, but nothing for the rear lid. I don't think the cables broke since it is still spring-loaded. So, out to the peanut gallery, how can I release the rear lid? Could the engine temps have expanded the release mechanism? I'll check this in the morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, try having your wife gently push down on the lid as you pull on the release. I've had this problem on another car and the above solution worked. Hope you have some luck, if it is the cable I hear they are a PITA to replace with the lid locked down.

Pull cable out, vise grip it so it doesn't slip. Then try and jimmy the hood back and forth, up and down. Worked for me.

Quick update...

Tried the engine lid first thing this morning. It took about 2 good pulls until "THUNK!". http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif Yeah!! the released worked! I inspected the latch side of the release and it looked fine: no rust and nicely lubed. However, the pull side had some rust along the pull bar. I am inclined to replace the whole wire/bar and lube it up. Anyone done this?

Never replaced cable, but I did adjust cable to lock pull stroke.

Be careful to center the reciever, or pin. Keep this lubed. I try to keep the cable pull as short as it can to keep the lid closed. Its just a little insureance. Keep this mechanism lubed and I give the pin mechanism a little twist before I close the lid. This keeps things smeared around a little.

I'm glad to hear that you managed to get the lid open. Keep the cable lubed too. This thing is a Real Pain in the Tusch to fix if it gets stuck shut. Not that the front is a piece of cake either!
