Unconnected Wires in Engine?

I am a novice owner of a 1987 911 Targa 3.2.

Can anyone tell me what the unconnected wires are suppose to attached to?
They come out of the left fuse box and end in front of the cruise control vacuum pump.
My cruise is working sporadically... it is a quick fix of attaching the wires somewhere or do I take it to a shop?

Thank you!

Those look more like the rear window defroster wires.

Can't help directly since I've completely heat backdated my car, but it's probably blower related. The blower assists in getting warm air into the cabin when the engine is at low idle. Anything else that doesn't work?

On an unrelated note, your engine compartment looks eerily clean, I mean eat off it clean like you've got yourself a completely restored car. We like the new membership to share pictures. :D

Welcome.

EDIT: just read Timmy's post, that might be the winner, right color but they're clustered together with the dual circuit defroster and brake lights in one harness on the 86.

Definitely not the blower wires, as they are on a single plug. The fact that they trace back to the rear fuse-block precludes them being alarm related.

Now is a good time to steer our new owner to the wonders of the Bentley Service Manual.

And you are now a Pelican. Our cars only go to the shop when all other avenues have been exhausted.

Thank you all for the quick response.
I'll check the rear defroster function.

DO YOU HAVE A BROWN & RED/WHITE WIRE?

tourt 12-22-2015 02:08 PM

Correct... two wires wrapped in the same line.
One red... One brown.
They are pretty short and I can't find where they disconnected from...

tourt 12-22-2015 02:09 PM

Maybe they were never connected nor serve a function.
I found while I was detailing the engine bay.

timmy2 12-22-2015 02:20 PM

Do you have a voltmeter?
Turn on the rear defroster and see if there is 12 volts from the red/white to brown wire.
Red/white is normally switched power in these cars. So test to see what activates it.
If it were for the defrost the male plugs that fit would be tucked up in the corner to the left of the shock tower.

Those look like spade terminals. I was thinking the defroster wires were a dual prong connector. At least that is what I seem to remember on my '83. I am going from memory but I think the spade connectors are for the heater blower motor, which doesn't appear to be there.

timmy2 12-22-2015 03:33 PM

Blower Motor connector changed over many years. First was the clear plastic one up to about 81, then a black T style connector, then a different flat plug connector in '84 etc.

The wires to the heater blower motor are yellow/black and brown and are always part of the engine harness. These ones originate at the rear fuse panel.

They could just be defunct carry overs from an earlier year, Porsche loves leaving unused wires in their harnesses from year to year... :)

I am sadly addicted to these questions and will vote Rear Window Wiper (either disconnected or stubbed for the option)
Colors actually look like Brown/White and Red (w/maybe black) to me.

Rear wiper it is

You are the wiring man, Dennis. I defer to your expertise.

timmy2 12-22-2015 07:59 PM

tourt, need to know exact colors or the wires. I see a red/white and brown wire. Could be camera flash though. Others see different colors... I'm an electrician by trad so I can't be color blind, but photos can be deceiving... :)

tourt 12-24-2015 09:02 AM

Dennis

Thank you... You are right..one wire is red and one is brown/white

timmy2 12-24-2015 09:21 AM

Ok, sounds more like it could be the rear wiper wires.
With those colors.

sugarwood 12-24-2015 10:29 AM

My '86 does not have a rear wiper
and it doesn't appear to have those 2 disconnected wires, either.

timmy2 12-24-2015 02:01 PM

If not the wiper then perhaps the courtesy lamp?

gerakroo 09-05-2023 10:28 PM

Rear defroster wires for sure, normally these are longer and lead to the engine fusepanel. I expect that these were cut and the previous owner crimped new terminals and sleeves to isolate them. I can also be the other end of the defroster loom. In that case the window itself is no longer connected.
