Hi all,
I finally decided to do it. Going to get the tranny done. Let me start by saying that my '85 Targa only has 50,000 miles on it, and now I having trouble going into 2nd gear from first. Grinding is really bugging me. Car also pops out of first sometimes. PLEASE, I need some advice as to what the problem is, so that when my wrench gets it, he won't take advantage of me. I'm not a DIY guy, and would love to get this fixed with minimum moola. ANY HELP AND GUIDANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS AGAIN. JON Last edited by jbripps; 04-22-2004 at 03:30 AM.. |

Jon,
If you drain your gear oil, I think you will find a large number of broken brass teeth from inside of the 1st-2nd gear operating sleeve, aka 'slider' ... #42 in the following diagram. With a greater ID and inadequate friction from the tension of the synchronizer ring upon the inside of the O.S. ... it won't stay in gear. You probably need a new operating sleeve, and new set of dog teeth for first gear, as well as the normal synchronizer piece parts #37, #39, #44, and #45, as well as the same parts for gears #2 thru #5. The 'spider' #41 may be damaged, too. Good luck! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

the above response is correct, other than the teeth in the drainplug magnet are steel, and they come from the pressed on syncro teeth ring on 1st gear. cold hard facts. if you continue to drive the car, severe damage can result if any of the several other items like the syncro ring, brake band or stop dogs that are now moving around free in the trans, get between any of the gear sets.
