Need help with small repairs
I have an '89 Carrera 3.2 that must of been in a serious accident way back in its history. It was apparantly reconstructed by Larry, Curly and Moe because I have spent the last 8 years correcting what they did wrong and I am still finding shortcuts and cheats that they did. I have some questions if anyone has the time or inclination to answer:
1. The plastic covers over the emergency brake light and passenger seat light fell off the other day and won't stay back on. Any suggestions to make them stay in place but still be able to remove them to replace light bulbs? 2. The light over the glove box does not work. How do you remove that cover? 3. The interior light on the drivers side does not come on when you open the door. It does come on if you push the cover to the permanent on position. It was suggested to me by Al Zim that it may be the door push button had twisted the wire when it was installed sometime in the past. I took that out but that does not seem to be the case. From anyones experience is that the switch or the light fixture? 4. The temperature gauge in the center console works very erratically. I took it out and sent it to Hollywood Speedo and they tested it and pronounced it working. My mechanic says the wire to the sensor is so short that it is giving an an reliable reading. Any suggestions? 5. I plan on taking a long road trip and pulled out the tool bag. After looking at the parts PDF on the Porsche Classic site I have come to the conclusion that someone swapped the original along the way to an incomplete later version. Since the wheels are not the original Fuchs but 964 Cups ( I actually like them better) I suspect the bag may have come from a 964. I showed it to Ed Mayo and he did not recognize it telling me it was a later model bag. I need to buy the correct bag and offer the bag I have to who ever needs it. Anyone willing to trade plus cash let me know. Thanks and thats all for now. Undoubtedly more surprises ahead.

Based on the problem you are experiencing, I too would start with the door switch. If you have already done that, the the next thing would be the dome light. Have you popped out the light assembly in the headliner? Maybe the contact there is going bad or damaged.
If I remember correctly, the lens assembly for the glove box light just unsnaps from the lip of the dash pad. The the parking brake/brake warning/seatbelt indicator not staying secured in the dash simply because it may have the some little securing tabs broken off that you are overlooking. Have you tried a new assembly? The other thing you could do is use some felt tape and wrap it around the assembly just inside the bezel. The felt tape should fill in any gaps and will allow the parking brake warning assembly to fit nice & snug and will not come out of the dash panel. Show some pics if you can of the assembly behind the bezel.

3. Usually the door switches are the problem. Your description isn't clear, though. If neither interior light comes on when you open the driver's door, I'd start with the switch. If the driver's side light doesn't come on, but the passenger side light does, start with the light. Either is easy to remove and test.
4. What gauge? 5. Tool kits have now gotten expensive. You might want to consider buying the tools you need that you do not have. Some are essential, but some are generic. A screwdriver is a screwdriver... JR |

Hank, the tools that are essential are the ones that immobilize the Fan when replacing the fan belt and the tool that unscrews the nut and in my opinion, the spark plug removal tool and the hex that drives it. Get a small tool box, size of a fishing tackle box and put a set of metric sockets and ratchet, an extension, a few metric wrenchs, 10mm-15mm, and several screw drivers. Might also need a few spare fuses, a quart of oil a spare DME relay (under driver's seat/via PP) and a copy of Wayne's 101 Projects for your 911. Search DME Relay to find out the problems it can cause. Good luck. Steve
