Oil Cooler fan is IN!

Finally installed the oil cooler fan. Used a 6.5" Spal with a manual switch. (used the rear washer switch wired thru a relay). Had to change the upper bracket, grind a little for clearance, dent the headlight bucket and it finally fit! Also changed the horns to the compact units for better air flow - the only problem is that it now sounds like a Buick horn! I don't see how people fit a 7.5" fan in there...

Ken,

Did you use the '87 -89 bracket that holds the cooler? That's the "easy" way.

I tried to utilize the stock setup on my '85 and it wasn't happening. With the updated parts you keep the horns but do have to drill a nearly impossible hole to mount the new bracket.

Looks good, nice job and it HELPS keep temps down for sure.

Hi Mike, thanks. Yes I used the 87-89 bracket. I still had to grind about 1/8" off the bracket just above the nut on the left side in the photo.

Hopefully I will be able to use the ac this summer without having to worry about the oil temps!

I wonder if removing the fairly useless fog lights on my '84 wouldn't also be a great help in increasing airflow to the cooler, as well as their switch providing an easy way to control a fan relay. I removed the bumper reinforcement bar, so may be able to block off the area between the cooler and fender to force more air through the cooler as well. In the hot and sticky weather, I like to keep both the engine oil and passengers cool!
