Question Choice of battery?

I need a new battery for an '86 911 turbo. I've searched this board and it seems some of you use optima batteries. Others go for interstate, and some for die hard. I don't seem to be able to find a battery that will fit well(group #49 I believe)in anything other than porsche OEM which goes for $135. Where do I find a battery that fits, or do I just rig up an adapter tray?

Right now I have an Interstate. When it dies I'm converting to an Optima. That's what I would do, if I needed one now.

Optima only choice for me. 5 years old in a track car, and starts first thing every spring.

I installed an Interstate in my '87 Targa.
Car is driven only occasionally for pure fun with the battery remaining connected in between rides. Only been 6 months but battery is still very strong and fit was excellent.

Running Optima in our two Dee-Troit iron. Found some exact size german made gel cells for the twin batteries in the old '72. Single battery? Get the adaptor kit, go Optima...you won't be sorry. The Optima in my old Dodge 4X4 is now 8 years old, going strong.

Optima seems to have a good history. It is a weird shape for an auto battery. Interstate also sells the optima battery in their own name.

I have also found a sealed/gel cell battery in the 24 size. This is a common size for GM vehicles. This is what I will go with. I made an adapter tray for the Porsche. It will hold a 24 size or a DT3, Wal-Mart special. This gives me a lot of flexability.

Good luck,
David Duffield

For those of you who like to innovate, try using two 6 volt Optima batteries in series. This way, you can split the weight in two and mount them in more "optimum" locations.

I just replaced an Interstate with another. The one that was replaced lasted 10 years, so I went with another.

You got that one right. Guess the lead is shaped in a spiral for each cell. At a local hot rod cruise-in, saw an optima "detailed"...like a six pak of Bud! Still wondering how he did that...
