911R flip over hinges

I searched the archives and found very little. I would like to install some 911R style flip over hinges on my engine lid.

I have only seen them available through GT-Racing. The price is quite steep for two pieces of stamped metal and a t-shaped bar.

Are there any more sources for these hinges?

Has anyone fabricated their own?

I would be willing to make some if I had some detailed pictures or model to look at. Any one that has these is welcome to let me borrow a hinge for a short period of time to take some measurements or just send some detailed pictures.

Thanks

Do you mean bonnet hooks?
They are about £4.50 ($7) per pair in the UK from Demon Tweeks or £6.77 from Europa Spares

I think he meant the hinges.
Would you drill your shell for them? I don't dare

Thanks Nick,

I already have a set of the rubber tie downs to replace the latch. I am looking for the hinge.

Ah ha.

I can't see $225 in those either!

I wouldn't make them for $225. It costs money to play with big-boy toys. Unless you have a "break" and the associated tools to stamp these items it gets expensive. I have a very talented machinist that can make just about anything, however, on "onesies" and "twosies" it is expensive since you are not operating efficiently. Tooling up for production requires man power and machinists are due there fair reward and they don't get paid minimum wage either!
I recently had a motorcycle gas tank bracket fabricated using an original as the pattern. It was a "one-off" for a rare tank that I am using in a restoration.
It cost $150. and we're talking about a piece of metal no more than 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. It did, however, have a number of "breaks"and areas that where it was necessary to use a Bridgeport.
I didn't scoff one bit at the price since I couldn't make it in my shop nor did I have the time to spend doing a crude fabrication.

Good luck with your endeavors.

I do have access to all the necessary items(tools materials and time) to fabricate myself a set. I just need a set to duplicate.

You are right, duplication does get expensive. It would not be cost effective to start a business reproducing these. I just want a pair and don't want to spend $200+ for 4 peices of stamped metal and a T bolt. That is too much P-car tax for me.

Jamie, I have been thinking exactly the same thing - I have gradually been tracking down the 'special touches' that contribute to the 911R look & have had no luck with the engine lid hinges & the louvred rear side windows yet.

I have been in contact with various people who've built R look-alikes & several owners have said that they've used alternatives from boat chandlers but I've not been able to find anything remotely similar.

Here are a couple of close-up pictures of the hinges on original 911R's - the first is chassis #20 (the ex-Matsuda car) & the secon is chassis #4 (then owned by Martin Koenig).

I have access to an original 911R which is currently being restored & I have seen the original hinges that came off the car - two things struck me - first was how tiny they are & the second was how crude they were!!

I will be visiting the firm that's doing the restoration again in a few weeks & plan to either borrow one of the hinges or to take detailed photos/measurements so if you don't get this information from anyone else before then I'll gladly send you the details.

You've too much time on your hands, Andy! Isn't it time for bed?

Now these are worthy of reproduction since they broke all too often.

Thanks for the pictures. g'nite.

Andy,

Great pictures. If you go back to visit the car, can you get pictures from the underside with the lid up? This would give me an idea of how they fit on the body section.

These seem different than the ones thatGT sells. It appears that the originals mount on the top of the decklid and body. I thought the aftermarket ones fit underneath. I could be wrong. Those seem pretty simple to make now that I have an idea of what they look like. Now my lunch hour will be spent in the machine shop here at the lab.

Of course, I might check the local boat supply store. There may be something similar that is nice and chrome plated.

We might all try looking around aircraft supply houses since they always have neat fasteners and doo-dads. The ones on the "real" R look like they are cast pieces to me (at least one side).

Apparently they all went to R Gruppe 'insiders' via word of mouth.

None left & no more planned is what I heard ...

Shame.

What I plan do do is strip the chrome off & powder coat them light grey to look like the originals.

Jamie I have a shot of R#4 with the engine lid open - you can see the side of the hinge fitted to the body but the detail is not brilliant :
