930 RS by Rennfrog
Hello everybody, I would like to present a very special project that I have had the great privilege to commission. There is something akin to a child's dream to witness the gestation of his own project until it bursts into life and roars on the road!
This project is mostly about friendship - Oliver7 has been instrumental in overseeing the entire build over several years... A special thanks to Fabien who has rebuilt the engine and gearbox, and to all others who have contributed! So we set about to recreate a car that actually never made it to production (!). For the 73 Paris show, Porsche presented the first 911 turbo. The engine does not run yet and the chassis is taken from a 73S ;-) but the message is clear: the new RS will be a Turbo!! ![]() Eventually Porsche chose to position the new Turbo as its high end offering loaded with every comfort options the factory had to offer. And all connoisseurs were left with nothing but their dreams to imagine what a 930 RS would have looked like if Porsche had dared! The good thing is that it left us with some liberty to design our own vision. Still we paid great attention to be true to the RS recipe: efficientcy and versatility, an RS has to be the ultimate sport car for the road which can be driven on the track. A dual purpose car built with every effort made to ensure the legendary Porsche quality was maintained. We chose to draw our inspiration from the many peculiarities of the 75MY, as the first 930s rolled out of the factory production line in 1975. ![]() ![]() A picture of the finished product, but hold your breath as I will endeavor to take you through all the build stages. Our starting point is a 1983 euro 930 3.3l with straight chassis and no rust. Still a lot of work had to be conducted on the shell to backdate it to a 75 930. For the MY75, Porsche only offered the 930 without sunroof (and AC)... We had to remove many items, including electrical flag mirrors, electric antenna, side markers. And add a lot of strengthening because it's an RS after all! ;-)
First thing is to remove all components to get to a naked shell. ![]() ![]() And then clean, clean... to remove all the dirt accumulated in 30 years From this: ![]() And this... ![]() To that: ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by 1100sport; 01-03-2016 at 09:02 AM.. |

The car was originally Platinum Metallic. A nice color which changes with light and suit the curves of the 930 well... But too chic to be an RS color. So a color change was on order. There is no secret: to get a nice paint, you need to have a perfect surface. Which is a lot of work to get right.
![]() ![]() ![]() In the cabin, Rennforg also took care of those places which would be painted black. ![]() The front wings were removed. The front trunk is now ready to receive a new paint. ![]() Early in the build, I chose to keep the impact bumpers. There is probably no other car which better incarnates the IB era than the turbo. This build is in fact an homage to the 74-89 cars. IB it was, IB car it will stay ;-) So more cleaning, from this: ![]() To this: ![]() It's time to bring the shell to the painter. ![]() ![]() Last edited by 1100sport; 01-02-2016 at 12:15 PM.. |
