Service Interval - HELP!

Since I value this boards opinion, here is the issue.

According to Bentley and Porsche Service Manuals, the O2 Sensor should be replaced at service interval. I stopped at my Local Porsche Dealer to get one and the head Mechanic happen to be there. He said they are not replacing O2 Sensors unless there is a problem. Parts guy, who was not there when I asked the question, said the same thing.

What do you guys think? I am at 86K miles on an 88 911 3.2L and know mine has NOT been replaced.

If it ain't broke, do I fix it?

I know that Porsche specifies that these are replaced every 30000 miles. Does anyone know if there is a reliable way to test these?

According to the workshop manuals, the O2 sensor is not a service interval item, or at least, I can't see it listed. For the 964, checking the function of the O2 sensor is a 12k service item, but I can't find anything helpful about checking it's function. Going by the service records for my car, they just junked the old one if a problem was even suspected... but then, I suspect that the previous owners had more money than I do.
