I'll second the recommendation to check out Rally Sport Region (assuming you were in Southeast Michigan before). I'm a little surprised that a region officer turned down an offer to host an event-- that's definitely unusual and may be more indicative of that person's attitude toward autocross than anything typical of the region. We don't currently have an AX event in either RSP or SEM regions, and it would be great if there were one (ideally before parade so us noobs can get some practice!).
Since you're on Pelican, I'll make a wild guess that you enjoy working on the car-- I'd suggest checking out "Time with Tim" at ArborMotion in Ann Arbor. Informal session at local independent Porsche shop, draws mostly the grease-under-the-fingernails crowd. SEM has similar events at Gilson Motorsport or Munk's Motors. Also good to come to one of the bigger drive events (usually the first drive in the summer or fall color drive)-- there are enough people and cars at those that you can pretty quickly find the age group/attitude you're looking for.

Like anything else, it isn't going to be for everyone, but it's not a bad deal even if all you get is the magazine and do one or two drives or track days a year. PM me if you want any specific info or contacts...

Sadly no - Been a Porsche owner since about 1987 and have too many friends already with Motorcycle/Snowmobile clubs. Over 1500 FB friends; don't know most.

Then, and old time local PCA member gave me boxes of Panorama - BuzzKill.

Track days, Autocross, DE's????? Was an instructor too many years at work. Road raced motorcycles on a regular basis for six years......I'm way past all of that stuff at this point....

Also, live in a lsolated area regarding Porsche ownership.........The few locals and I get together a few times per year to drive and have a drink at the end of the day.......Just my narrow little opinion.....

I was a member from '69 through '89 (Kansas City Region, then TN Region, then charter member of Smoky Mtn. Region) when I got out of Porsche's for awhile. Then rejoined in 2012 when I bought my project SC. I'm glad I'm back, I didn't realize how much I had enjoyed the cars and (most of) the people. So I highly recommend PCA membership.

As lots of others here have said it depends on the region. Some are really good and fun, others are not so much. The magazine is great; in its latest iteration it is as about as good as any car mag you can buy. Emphasizes the new cars a bit much, I think, but overall really good. It covers the industry outside of Porsches quite well. I only have two car mags coming now; the Pano and Hemming Sports & Exotic Cars.

Now if one of them would just steal Bob Lutz away from R&T as a columnist . . .

I joined my local probably 10 years ago. They were really only interested in getting together for dinners and at the local Porsche dealerships so I left.

I joined again last year and it was pretty much the same. I felt it would be easier to form a group for air cooled only as our interests are different than the local pca guys. DEs etc would be nice but I would even be happy with just getting together, finding some good roads, and driving. A few beers after would top it off nicely. So that's what we plan to organize ourselves. My local pca would just get in the way. Who needs those water cooled guys anyway. :)

PM sent, thanks for the info.

When I lived in LA no -- it was all POC there for me since they were the track club.

Up here in Toronto the PCA UCR is pretty sweet -- lots of track, autocross, the magazine, rallies, rambles, socials and one concours. And I've met some great guys already in only a year.

Good group and well worth the not much money

I like the "air coolers only" idea (sort of like the Airheads Beemer Club thing for BMW bikes) except that it dilutes the base for both clubs. Otherwise great. For the most part I find we with the old cars have little in common with the late-model drivers; entirely different outlook on the cars, etc. And few ( and this is understandable) DIY'ers.

Make a poll, it will be interesting, .....
I joined for the mag, meet other P owners, shows, meets at local shops, the raffle....met some really nice folks.

I've met some people that appreciate all the cars of the marque and then others who think if you're driving some old air cooled car it means you can't afford a new one.

I guess those of us in PeachState PCA might have it a little different because we happen to be in the same vicinity as PCNA. I know of two occasions recently -- one by PCNA and the other by a local dealership -- where they specifically asked those of us with old air cooled cars to come show up for special events to celebrate Porsche history.

I guess my point is... some people are snooty and some people are salt of the earth. Maybe the proportions of people vary by chapter so YMMV.

I joined in 2005. We have a great region here and I have met a lot of friends over the years.

Some regions are great, some are not. They are all run by volunteers. Some people are 'club' types, some aren't. It really goes both ways. PCA is not for everybody. But they must be filling some type of need since membership growth is 5-8% each year. Forums are great, but being able to do some type of P-car event almost every weekend makes ownership that much more fun.

It's pretty cold in Maryland right now but we've got tech sessions, socials, and even two slot car racing night (the region owns its own 40x30 four lane slot car track) to keep you busy until the weather warms up.

I was a member when I lived in Seattle, very active club with a great DE/autocross program. I moved to Spokane in 2013 and re joined. We are working to bring back our events that focus on driving and I've instructed here a few times. Great people and pretty active group socially although I've not done much with that aspect of it. Parade is coming to us in 2017 and I'll be racing a 914 in Vintage going forward so I expect to stay pretty involved.

Come to Beers and burgers next Thursday and we can talk. Hear both sides from the gang.

I made some remarks on this thread in January, and I stand behind what I said at that time. Let me add this now: If you are considering joining a local region of PCA, ask to see a copy of their bylaws. Study the way in which officers are selected for the region.

Like any other group of people, there are positive people, and negative ones. If the process by which officers are chosen is open and flexible, with input from general members as to whom should run for office (as opposed to a closed-door selection method, with a Soviet style yes or no vote for the whole slate), then that region has a good chance to develop broad-based and interesting activities that really reflect what the general membership wants - as opposed to what happens with a small and non-transparent cabal running things.

If you have fresh ideas, and the energy to back them up, get yourself on the board and help to create and run an exciting region. If your local region is a closed fiefdom where nothing much happens, join a better region next door.
