Factory 1973 RSR questions

Here's a Porsche website photo of the 73 RSR:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...SR_615x240.jpg
2 questions, I don't know the answers, just thought somebody might.

1. That looks like an RS rear bumper as the extensions don't match up with the fender flare. Does anybody know if they used the RS fiberglass bumper at first and then made one for the RSR later...?

2. What's the red thing below the bumper in the oil tank area?

TRE Cup 12-05-2002 04:48 PM

The red thing below the bumper IS the oil tank painted to match.
Can't say about the bumper ends on the factory beauty race car shot. By this point in time most of the RSRs are restored. I will check with John Skoein about his all original 73 orange RSR- in fact it is the one in the original Road and Track article!

Since RSR's were actually a RS with option M491 it's possible it left the factory that way. Then again most of these cars have been wrecked and repaired a few times so who knows what it left the factory with.

Who knows, it might have even started life as an S. I'll see if I can find it in Starkey's book.

Bobby? What was the "comfort" option in '73? Just searchin' for info.

Bobboloo 12-05-2002 05:52 PM

I couldn't find it in Starkey's book.

What's interesting in the picture is that it has a 69' to 72' right rear lense and a 73' left rear lense. Maybe the car was restored to look as it did after it finnished a pinnacle race. After all it wouldn't have left the factory in that paint scheme anyway.

Paul,

M470 according to Peter Morgan.

Noticed a few other things.

1. The front fender looks like a 916 flare.

2. The rear flare looks a little different than a RSR flare too.

3. Ride height. Was this a rally car?

Did RSR's have a larger oil tank? Seems like that one is really visible, maybe the bumper is shorter than usual?? I agree it has to be the oil tank but I'm not used to having them be that obvious. Maybe it's because it's red....

No mention of oil tank change in the homologation papers. In going back and looking I noticed the RSR front and rear flares appear like the ones on this car. I guess I'm just used to looking at turbo flares that don't appear so concave on the front .

When you check with John in Sacto...please ask if his RSR was once owned by a guy named Bill H., from Hood River, Oregon? I'm curious...

The flares are slightly different to standard 930 flares (not quite as squared off). I very particular local guy paid big $'s to have them replicated in steel on his replica - most people just use 930 style.
