Rebuilding engine.... Wish list
Alright guys,
My engine is currently at a rebuilder (gentleman from our forum here) and is about to undergo the tear down process in preparation for the rebuild. He will be doing the top and bottom end. With that said - I am trying to get input on some of the build specs. Thus far I am only certain on the fact that I will be using 993 heat exchangers with a custom exhaust --- everything else is way too expensive and the factory exhaust is way too restrictive. I also plan on using the GT3 bearings due to questionable quality of the other ones. I have considered the 964 cams due to a power increase but the fact that you are prone to lose power on the lower end is a big turnoff. With that said however, I am also considering doing the 964 cams with higher compression Pistons I.e 9.5:1. I anticipate that the higher compression pistons would allow for some power increase in the well and in the 964 cams would allow a bit of a power bump in the top end. This brings me to the next topic of valves. Are there any particular valvesprings that you recommend? Head studs? All in all - open to recommendations. I am trying to hot rod slightly however retain the existing CIS. I'd like to do the higher compression pistons but I'm also slightly concerned about them mating with the old cylinders. Does this typically turn out to be a problem? Please let me know if there are any items that now looking back you wish you had done while your engine was all torn apart for rebuild. Thanks Paul |

Paul, George Perdomo would be someone to speak with about what you're looking to accomplish. I agree with DP that your rebuilder should have the answers but it's not a bad idea to get a second opinion. And I'm sure George will discuss you're interests even though you're not local to him---he just likes to talk Porsche and help people out. Wow! Nice collection of parts. What has the builder recommended? Ask your builder to document the build with photos so you can keep us all jealous.
My 3.2 was built last year by flat6pak and I can't wait for it to be installed and fired up. We went with 964 cams, stock pistons/cylinders, and a Steve Wong custom chip for 91 octane and stock Motronic and heat exchangers ('71 Six) with an essentially stock muffler. My goal was a no nonsense, reliable, no issues, engine. |
Engine rebuild..............
I used the 964 cams in my 3.3SS rebuild and didn't notice any loss of low end power or torque. One thing that you can do without spending a ton of money is to have everything balanced. Get the crank done first, add the flywheel and then the clutch cover. Balance the rods not only for total weight but also for small end/large end weights. If you have the cash, you can do a bit of machine work on the heads and bump compression some. A set of pre 74 exhausts will help as will swapping to an MSD 6A or 6AL ignition unit. Most everything else takes boatloads of money!
