Well a new contender has entered the ring. I might have to hand in my PCA membership card but I've been eyeing up '96-'02 Dodge Vipers. I'm pretty sure it's a bad idea but that's kind of the draw. It'll probably all go away the first time I climb back into my SC.... maybe.....hopefully?.....i need to be saved I think.

Cost of tires and brakes for track days in a viper???
Do more track days in your SC and you won't ever want to get out of it. You need more bonding time. Stay away from road courses that feel like drag strips

An older Viper is going to feel like a truck compared to your SC. Like many others have said, keep your SC, learn to drive it to its (or your) limits, and then consider something else.

I would consider an early z06 corvette long before a viper.

A Viper??!!! Yuk! I have driven a few... no frigging way... the reference to driving a truck is spot on... driver position, pedals, shifter... man! everything is wrong about them...
If you want speed... then go with the 996TT.... not a Viper!

+1... a C5 Z06 would be much better than a Viper... still... if what the OP wants is something different... then just go with the 996TT
Seems he has the itch for a change... got to scratch it. Just do not make the mistake of getting into a Viper... you have been warned.

I did some soul searching last night and decided I'm really a Porsche guy.
And also as someone mentioned I do have an itch. I think the biggest contributor is I want to get out on the track safely. I am having the car checked out by a pro to make sure I didn't miss anything but I'm fearful of some brittle CIS part braking on me or even worse an engine failure. I started looking at 987.1 Cayman S however that still has the IMS issue and the 987.2 cars are much more money. I think we can let this thread die now, I appreciate all the input. I will not be purchasing a 996tt (and probably not a Viper). If anything happens it'll be to another Porsche.

The good news is that now you are stuck with one of the most bullet-proof engines that Porsche has ever made

![]() In terms of depreciation, they have pretty much reached bottom, so most likely you will not loose any $ when you decide to sell it. And those are THE 996 to buy/own (engine that go back to the racing cars, etc.)

This is up to the Porsche forum Gods.. It may live on as a constant reminder of your urge to trade your SC in for a Viper

The SC is a strong car/engine. You will give up on the track before it does.

A original viper gts has always been a childhood dream of mine (second to a 911). Maybe i need to drive one to put it to rest. I figured the red hot sidewells and cabin that smells of glue when you drive would be endearing. But i like oddball cars.
And the new viper is one of the hottest looking cars on the road.

For the price of a 3.6 transplant in the SC you could have a very nice Spec Miata. track ready.
As far as a bad interior on a 996 TT you could cage it / gut it and it wouldn't bother you anymore. I don't even know what a Viper is, but glad you passed on that..

Put me on the list if you sell the SC. I'd love a non-original widebody in black.
