Removing Vinyl Side Script from 42 Year Old
 

Hello all. I am purchasing a 74 914 that has the original (factory or dealer installed) "Porsche" script on the sides. The still original paint is light ivory.

Can the 42 year old script be removed: 1. Without pulling the oem paint off. 2. Without leaving a permanent shadow or un-oxidized outline of where the script shielded the paint all these decades?

If you want to try, you can purchase a tool for removing vinal decals, your local body supply house should have them.

I have had pretty good luck removing vinyl decals with a heat gun and a plastic scraper. Sometimes you can soften a corner with the heat gun and pull it away slowly while applying heat to the nearby surface. The paint which has been shielded by the decal all these years will be the unoxidized original color.

Heat gun, lightly heat and peel with finger nail. Be careful not to bubble paint. Goof off for residue. You may have a shadow due to paint fade.

I did this on 35 year old stickers applied to a repaint. As noted, the stickers are easy to get off. And as noted, the letters were still visible due to differential fading of the paint. I ended up color sanding the entire car and was able to remove the ghost image. Then buffed it out with a DA and the entire car looked great.


So it comes down to how much paint you have on the car, and how brave you are. I wasn't too concerned since my paint was not original. You may want to consult a professional detailer if you head down this path.

I made the leap that in the OP's case the original sticker means original paint. At the time light ivory was SS.

Just to point out clean the area around the script thoroughly of any dirt that might get under / near your hand or scraper before you begin. A very hot day helps a lot so you do have some time to think on this.

I am told by the owner (originally his grandma's from new) that it is positively the original paint in light ivory. And, the car has never had accident damage or paint repair.I really love the color and the script completely deviates from the look I want.

I will evaluate the paint when I actually lay hands on the car and get it home. But, I am pretty certain I will have a go at removal of script and color sand.

Man, I am as excited as a child to get this car.

914s mostly were dealer installed unless they were Limited Edition CANAM models. If I recall correctly.

If it IS a CANAM, you should put a new one on to be "correct"....God I hate that word.

What color is the script?
