Basic Front Control Arm / Strut Question

This is regarding my 88 Carrera...I suppose I could figure this out by experimentation but figured I'd ask in the interest of safety...on the rear, the shock absorbers act as lower "limit stops" for the trailing arms, so it's necessary to support the trailing arm before disconnecting the shock. This is mentioned in Bentley, 101 Projects, etc. However, there is no mention of this in the procedures for front strut insert work. When the car is jacked up and the front wheel removed, does the front suspension settle to it's "relaxed" position? I'm just wanting to make sure I don't need to worry about anything being under tension when disconnecting the strut.
Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that it's pretty dependent on both your height and the torsion bar you have in there.

I'd keep the arm supported by a jack to be safe, undo the top nut, then let the jack down slowly.

Thanks. I figured as much but wanted to ask.
