What Kind of Paint?

What kind (not brand) of paint did the factory use on my Guards Red '88 Carrera? It is in excellent condition. Lots of evidence suggests that POs kept the car out of the sun's UV at home and at work. I am curious as to what kind of paint the factory was using in the late 80s.

Glasurit, single stage, non metallic. Oil based. NLA due to EPA restrictions. Now pretty much everything is base/clear coat. But some single stage acrylics are still available. 22-line

Base/clear has been around for quite sometime.. and not due to EPA as in some states its still available in solvent based. I think what you meant was water based "base"/clear coat is more prevalent now due to EPA restrictions.

Yes, some single stage acrylics are still available. I like using those on chassis, trunk and engine areas.

When did 911 production switch from oil based to water based?

That's a good question as many companies switched before the big push for it but never really said anything about it.
I really don't even remember seeing or hearing of service bulletins regarding this.

The big misnomer in all of this is that the previous paint isn't oil based.. its solvent based. And the only thing water based at this point is the actual base coat! The primers and the clears are still solvent based.
