Need help to identify wires by DME

Hi, I removed my DME yesterday to get the last little bits of old sound deadening off and noticed that there are two brown wires taped to the main wire harness. When I removed the tape I saw two plugs that look to be made to fit together. Can anyone tell me what these are for, why they might be taped off, and if I should do something with them or leave them alone?

On a different note, does this DME look like anyone's had it open? The car is new to me about a year ago and looks to be pretty much original save a crappy radar detector and stereo install. It is a bit jumpy in 1st gear in parking lots and have done some reading that this may be caused by aftermarket chips so I thought i'd look into that but thought I would ask before bending back the tabs - they don't look like they've ever been moved to me.

All assistance is appreciated.

Mark.

Those brown wires are for California emissions purposes only; they would be connected, and the DME would use a different map. Unfortunately, that map also reduces power somewhat, so it's best to leave the wires tapes up and unused. If you check out Steve Wong's website (911chips.com) he has a nice explanation about all of this.

Thanks Lyle, nice to know what the non connected bits are for. I'll check out Steve Wong's site as suggested.

+1 Cali and Japanese Emissions Wires, just tape them off so they will not corrode.
