blew oil line!

I was running with spirit this morning and blew the line from the engine oil cooler to the thermostat. I have been having high pressure 140 psi and very cool temps, well less than 180, I suspected the thermostat was not working, staying open letting oil continously go the the radiator in the front. I let it idle and checked the lines, it was warm as it was after a long drive, but not hot. Today, the line seperated from the connection. Hopefully pulled it over soon enough to prevent damage. I pulled the fender thermo. apart and a piece of fiber was broken on the small plunger. I would imagine i need to replace the thermo. in the fender, but what else should I do? Pressure is too high and I don't want this happening again. 76 with an 83 3.0 front radiator cooler.
Thanks,
John

There are two things you need to check in the side thermostat. From what I understand you have the thermostat under one screw cap and then you have a pressure limiter, (plunger) in another. You need to make sure you have the right one for the right year.

Not sure if it is stuck in the block or not, I will check it tomorrow hopefully, but it is the girlfriends birthday..... Maybe Tuesday, I hope it is only the thermostat and the pressure relief, don't want to operate on top!

Well, I think I got it fixed. The aux. thermostat was replaced, blown line replaced, the pressure sender was for a Euro model, put my old 2.7 one in. Even fixed the axle that had a blown boot. I checked the relief valve, it was cool. Now the pressure is 20 at idle and up to about 70-80 psi running hard, the temp has stayed up to 180 around town. I hope this is the fix, that was pretty scary, but the motor feels good and undamaged. I guess the thermostat was stuck open and it never let the oil get warm, which made the pressure higher. I put 10w-40 in it and will put 20-50 or something this spring. Good to have him back!
John

Doesn't leak now, or, should I say, for now!
