Carrera and GT3
Non-technical I know, please don't yell ...
I've been daily driving my targa with immense enjoyment the past 4 years. Love the noise, feeling every pebble on the road, the old-school tranny, instant response, onramp engine symphonies. My current daydream is owning a 996 GT3 because it's been said the driving experience is more primal than other nanny-ified water pumper 911s. For those pelicaners out there who have driven a GT3, how do you compare to an '86 targa 'warm' rod (Wong chip / exhaust)? Supposing one (like me) happily daily drives the targa, would the GT3 be a happy daily driver? |

I am fortunate enough to currently own both a 930S Cabrio & an '04 GT3CS. Having owned both a 289 & 427 SC Cobra, in my mind, the 996 GT3 is the modern day version of the 427 SC complete with creature comforts such great Recaro seating, power windows and AC - I's a real e-ticket ride!!

While you don't get the same engine, suspension changes and tweaks can be made to a plain jane 996 or 997 to handle much like a GT3. There's plenty of them out there, GT3s are few in numbers.

Lol how does it compare? It doesn't other than having the engine out back. A gt3 in any generation is a treat to drive. That said my early stage hot rodded 964 is starting to feel a bit like my gt3 But it's hard for me to fathom hoy my 89 would have to be transformed to drive like a gt car. The only g body I've seen close would be the monster 85 g body with 964 motor joey Seely built (project nasty)
Get the gt3 you won't regret it and don't bother trying to mod a 996 or 997 to be one. You'll spend the difference and still not have the motor trans which is part of the charm. As far as a daily? Maybe not. I mean it's relatively comfy and all... |

996 gt3s have practically doubled in price right along with the air cooled rise, where "regular" 996 values have remained stagnant. That should tell you something.
You're talking about two pretty wildly different cars though. Your '86 is basically a 1963 901 with a little extra fast tacked on. The 996 GT3 is a 1997 911 with some (really nice) fast tacked on. 34 years is an eternity in vehicle evolution - compare today's cars to those of 1982. There is really no comparison. Truly one of those cases where you have to have both. Sure wish I had the means...

The only reason I mention a plain jane 996 or 997 and modding the suspension is because GT3s have gotten so expensive. Given the choice I'd choose a GT3 as well.
Good luck in your GT3 search.
