autox and de
my wife and i went to a pca dinner last night. on the way home she started asking about auto crossing and driver education events. lucky me!
i don't wont to start a flame or be ot, but i was thinking about a 951. i know you need to spend a few more dollorinos to be competitve, but i was leaning towards the 'bang' for the buck therory. (i really don't want to modify the stock cars i have.) any opinions or naysayers

Why not let her drive her 914? After all it is the Autocross Weapon of Champions. Even in a stock configuration, it is a hell of a lot of fun at an autox.

I've never autocrossed, but I did have a 951. I loved the car, great handling, great power (once spooled-up), comfortable, but, from what I have heard, not the greatest autocrosser. The guys who seem to do well autocrossing use light cars with good low end "grunt" and very quick turn-in properties (Ithink the term is "tossable"). Actually, if you want to go with the 944 type, look into the S2, it has the turbo suspension and brakes but with a DOHC 3 liter engine, suppose to have good low end power, and suspension is just as "tuneable" as the 951's. On the other hand, if you want a track car, you can get 350 HP out of a 951 for about the cost of a 911 exhaust system.
Good luck, Jerry M '78 SC |

I think the turbo guys don't know how many chuckles they get from onlookers at AX. Mind you, we're all very charitable and respectful, but it is comical to watch someone try to AX a powerful, earlier-generation (lag) turbo. Later turbos are smoother (less lag), and they do better but not very much better. Just less funny.
No, for AX you want a normally aspirated engine. The perfect car would have a wheel base that is both wider and longer than a 911, perhaps with the wheels virtually at the extreme corners of the car. As I say the car's stance would be wide and long, but the car would be small, especially in height. It would be very squatty height-wise. It would have the engine in the center of the car, with the drive wheels in the rear. The engine would not need to be a high-horsepower thing, just peppy is all. It would be lightweight also. There is a car that fits these criteria quite well.

Yes, yes, you certainly do need some more vehicles - not.
Why don't you use the T. You don't have to go out to win, rather go out to have a fabulously good time ![]() |

Excellent info. A good car for a DE is not the same car that you would necessarily want for an autox. A 914 would probably be an excellent autox car, but a little slower than most people might want for fun at a DE while a 951 would probably be fun for a DE (higher polar moment of I) more forgiving, easier to drive and look good, with decent speed and power, but that higher polar moment would actually be a detriment at an autox.
And as stated above, the T would probably be a good mix of the two, a compromise of sorts.
