Trying to sell my 88 911 coupe-am I still asking too much?
I first put my 88 911 Venetian Blue/Blue 71k mi coupe for sale on some Porsche boards and cars.com but haven't had any real bites other than the stray dealer and some people that said my price was about right (when I had it at $24,500 OBO) or too high. I lowered the price to $22,000 OBO and haven't had any success, though it's only been a week. Does it take months and months to sell an 88 911 or is it just that time of year in Maryland where there is snow on the ground and my chances of selling a 911 this month is not very good at all? I thought people might want to treat themselves for Christmas with a cherry 911 but I guess I was wrong. Is it that the sportscar bug hasn't kicked in yet and won't kick back in till May? Am I a fool to think it would be possible to sell my beloved 911 in December in the Northeast, or is $22k OBO too much to ask for in a recession?
Thanks in advance! I'm looking for a Polar or Arctic silver/Black interior C4S in the $45k-49k range with higher miles if it gets me into that price range! My logic figured that if we were in a recession, wouldn't it follow that the prices of 993 C4S's would come down like 99-00 996's had? Unfortunately my logic isn't holding water as 993's are holding strong! If anyone has any leads to someone selling one in this price range- feel free to email me! Unfortunately, the wife has said I DO have to sell my 88 first to get the car. Regards, Steve 88 911 Venetian Blue, Blue leather, 71k miles, Gorgeous, new clutch, pads, rotors, clean, straight, receipts, owned 5 years, PCA member. Steve:
Richard is helping a friend of his find a Carrera, and your price is not out of line based on the "ones that got away" from him. He is looking for a Black one unfortunately. Probably just the time of year and the local economic jitters. Good luck, and your wife is a wise person, these 911s have a tendency to stay around even after another one comes along.

But, the C2S and C4S models do seem to be holding strong. Never underestimate the power of big flares on a 911! |

Unfortunately, it's a bad time to be selling a Porsche. You cannot sell your car for the exact same reason that the cars you're looking at are so cheap - the market for Porsches (and I think all luxury cars) is depressed at the moment.
Having said that, I think that your price is reasonable for this point in time. It does take awhile to sell 911s, because even in good times, there are not many people that buy 15 year old 911s. My advice is to stick to advertising in places with people that know Porsches, like this board or Pano. Unless you're willing to accept an insanely low bid, expect to have the car for awhile before it sells. As for the 993 C4S, I imagine that the market is still pretty high for them. In a lot of "Porsche purist" minds, the 993 C4S represents the latest best of the best Porsche and in a lot of cases is more expensive than an equivalent 996. While you wait to sell your car, browse for the next one - I've found that the more patient you are, the better deal you get.

Thanks Dan-great price but wrong color
Yeah - I guess I better hunker down and be prepared for a very long winter, sitting on my little garage queen and driving it on the rare beautiful, snow free, salt free days! It may have to wait till Spring for a sale, if no reasonable offers come along.
And thanks for the link to PAR with that Blue C4S, Dan. While it looks to be a clean car, I would never deviate from my original idea of getting the color I want - Silver with black interior. I really only want that color, and will be spending alot of money to get this "last" Porsche, so I might as well hold out for the right combo. I never liked the light grey interior, as the carpets get trashed after a while in my part of the world with winter weather and just dirt in general. I must have a black interior. Peace, Steve 88 911 Coupe ![]() |

With snow still on the ground here, you're gonna have to wait a while longer.

Thanks Richard! I can use all the help I can get in this cold weather. I just had a gent from college email me for pics of the engine, back seats and front seat closeups, so I delved furthur into my digital camera, and novice picture taking skills, and car's engine - a place I'm rarely at, and took the pics he wanted. This selling thing is alot of work these days in the world of digital cameras and online ads. More work than the old days when you threw an ad in the local paper with a simple phone call and hoped for the best.
These days you have ALOT more resources - it's kind of fun, if you're not in a hurry. I guess there's no hurry for me. Just anxious to upgrade to a 993. After owning a car for 5 years, I'm ready to try something different. Thanks to all so far, Steve 88 911 Coupe For Sale! |
