68 vs 69 front turn signal differences?
Anyone know what the difference is between the 68 vs 69 front turn signals?
What would be required to make the 68 turn signals fit (if they would) in a set of 69 model fenders? Thx, Joe |
SWB turn signals will not fit a LWB car. i don't think there can be any modifications. same with the horn grills. it was only recently that reproduction lenses were finally made (mid-last year). they also finally made reproductions horn grills for the SWB. 69-73 turn signals are far more avail than 65-68. you should be able to find a set without problems through salvage yards. good luck.

Bob,
Thats the problem! I have found several sets of 68 model front turn signals for a reasonable price. All the used 68-73 front turn signals I have found in good condition are way overpriced. Have seen them new on Ebay for $197 each not including the lens, but most of the others want over $150 for them used. MikeZ and I have been looking for a couple of sets for three months now and no joy... Was just wondering if anyone had ever placed a SWB and LWB front turn signal next to each other and what the differences were. I can get real creative when the parts are this expensive! Joe |
i would try calling EASY in emeryville for a complete set of used turn signal units. if you already have the actual units or housings i would just buy the lenses which are somewhat inexpensive and replace those. i did this and it was real easy. i paid approx $50 per lens for the fronts. email me if you need the contact info for EASY. they're a great source for used items.
bob 68L you must be looking at the units that recently came up on ebay for a good buy it now price. |
Joe,
20th Street Auto had a set in great condition with lenses about a month ago. I sent someone else there and was told that they got em for a great price. If you have checked them out you might try again. |
Thanks for the ideas... Nothing panned out yet.
20th street has nothing, just talked to them. They want $120-150 for each housing and another $100 for lenses (new) when they have the parts on hand. Will try the other firm. For this kind of money for used parts I may just build something... Thanks, Joe |
Joe, although the front turnsignals were quite different on swb & lwb models it may be possible to use the earlier versions if you also use the corresponding horn grilles - I think that the combined length of turnsignal + horngrille is the same.
Assuming that the end (closest to the wheelarch) of the lamp unit has the same shape as the later version it would only necessitate relocating the 'dividing wall' (between the lamp unit & horngrille) a little bit further towards the wheelarch to accept the wider swb horn grille...
