Freshing up the headliner
Our 73E's headliner is generally in good condition but it is stained. I'm not at all anxious to jump into a headliner replacement so, I'd like to know if I can just freshen it up with a vinyl dye. Changing it from it's current stained "white" to black is perfectly acceptable to me. Anyone try this and what were the results? Also, any suggested product for this undertaking? Or is there a way to restore it to white again? Thanks for your help.

You could prep and dye it using Leatherique products (I did my leather seats last winter and they came out quite nice). It would be a lot of work to prep the vinyl, mask and spray multiple coats of dye with an air brush overhead. In the end it might be just as much work as removing all of your glass to do the new headliner without satisfactory results, IMO.

Jim,
I'd stick with white if you plan to try to dye (brave man)...I think white would be a whole lot easier, but I worry about the potential mess. I just received a new headliner and fresh windshield seals for my '74 from our host. I've read the job is a b#$%^ to do yourself, so I'm biting the bullet this week for an upholsterer and glass shop...hopefully it will last another 28 years. Sorry I don't have any "how to" advice but I know a couple owners ago dyed or painted my headliner black. I saw it was white when I fixed the sunroof. Overall it looks pretty good. Although when I replace it I'll probably go back to a white one.

A sharpie and a lot of time? Might even blend with small alternating squares of equal size.

You could try shoe dye...like the type that women use to change the colour of shoes.
I tried "Tana" on a motorcycle seat...changed it from brown to black...worked nicely...lasted for 15 years before I had to do it again. Nice thing about Tana...it comes with a round ball type swab to apply. Bob
