Raised Shifter in a street car?

I've always struggled with the the placement of the shifter on the 911. I am over 6" and always have the seat all the way back. Running through the gears can be slightly annoying, especially reaching 5th gear (T-rex arms?). Short shift kits only make it worse.

I've driven cars where the shifter is higher and placed a father back. I found it pretty sweet to operate. So I have my project car completely stripped, so if I am ever going to do this, now is the time. However, all the raised shifter tunnels I have seen here are installed in stripped out race cars. If I were to do this, I would want to keep the parking brake and foot well heat controls and put carpet on it. The Rebel Racing shifter tunnel reportedly allows these two controls to remain.

The Hargett model looks like it is seriously race-oriented and probably not easily made to look street car appropriate. I've found a thread where someone fabbed a modification where they moved it back 2 inches, but not raised.

So has anyone installed one of these in a street car with actual carpet? Can you share a picture if you have? Any other thoughts ideas on tackling this?

subscribed. I'm at the same stage of my build and am tall(6'5") and would love the shifter to be a little further back. I just bought a Jwest rennshifter that is 2" taller so hopefully that helps if there isn't a n acceptable solution to move the shifter closer.

Same issue for smaller guys too. I put a 2" extension on the stock shaft and that was great.
I now have a rennshift with extended shift and made another 3/4 in extension ( hex bolt) that fits under my knob....perfect.

Another vote here for lengthening the shift lever or knob. I made some different length knobs for my Wevo, and wound up with a 5" tall knob that I like.

A couple of observations on the Hargett Shifter (although mine is installed in a club racer) difficult to make it look anywhere near "stock", I'm 6ft and the mounting position using the existing bolt holes is perfect for me, if you did move it back 2 inches it would make using the hand brake a lot easier. I did find the whole unit had a bit of play so we fabbed up two braces that mount to the seat mounting bolts, improved the shift feel and now doesn't move at all, you can see the top of these braces in the pic.

I have the Rebel Racing tunnel installed in a street car.

It does increase the noise in the car a bit due to the holes on the side. If you want to use the heater controls you will need to cut out a notch to make them fit.

When you install it make sure you don't drill through your fuel lines. Don't ask how I know

Shortshiftkit + extended shifter + bend the shifter some more.
I think I will try that myself this year when I get the car together again.

I had not seen that rebel racing unit.

I like the idea of the Hargett but had heard they flex a bit. and I always hear how great the WEVO kit is. using this tunnel unit and the WEVO may be a good combination.

will have to consider when I get closer to that point.

Duck, looks pretty sweet! Is that a stock bent shifter or a straight shifter? Is it the stock length?

It's the wevo classic, so it uses the stock bent shifter.

The picture shown in the beginning of this thread is a photo of the shifter and interior of my 930 race car. I would highly recommend this setup for either a race car or for use in a street car. It places the shift knob in the perfect spot for either application. It's an awesome setup!

It is not the shifter that flexes, its the thin tunnel sheet metal to which it is mounted. This is easily solved for but parking brake and heater controls would still be an issue if you wish to retain those.

Mixed solution

Hello
I had a similar problem in my '71 and fixed it with a mixed brand solution. I had on hand both a WEVO classic 915 shifter with the long solid knob and a J West long 915 shifter unit. What I did was install the J West long shifter unit which in itself is 1.5inches longer than stock and added on top the WEVO long knob, this set up came up to 3 inches longer than stock. Since the J West unit is angled back slightly more than the stock unit, it fits me perfectly now and together with a steering hub extension, my seating position is now better than in any car I've owned. I will repeat this set up in my other cars now.
Hope this helps
MD

Here's a setup that provides a solution for all the above concerns:

Spring loaded gear positions (1/2, 5th/Rev. Default 3/4: Seine Systems Gate Shift kit
Shorter throws: Weltmeister Short Shifter
Longer shift lever: Seine Systems lever extension (5.5" for WM lever)
Flexy tunnel metal: WM aluminum spacer betw. tunnel and shifter
