3.6 993 Motor...oil leak from driver valve cover.

Hi there.

I've got a bit of a leak from my valve cover on the left side. I'm told this is a fairly common problem. What's the "go to" fix for them? Is there anything else I should look for or be worried about as I'm diagnosing?

Thanks!

Michael

It is an easy job. Word of caution: be very careful removing the fasteners attaching the valve cover, if you do not have a firm seating with the tool you are using, they will strip easily. I was able to replace mine without removing the muffler or exchanger but it required the right size Allen/hex fitting. If you cannot get a firm grip on all the fasteners with the muffler on, then you are better off removing the muffler to avoid stripping the bolts. I would order new hardware and the gasket to replace them. The torque for the fasteners is 10nm and you should use a cross pattern when torquing them down.

Next time you are in there check to see that the cover is not warped. Very fine abrasion on a piece of glass works nicely.
Also, take the time to torque the nuts sequentially and incrementally up to proper torque making sure you do not over do it and squeeze the gasket out.
OTOH I have a seep, which is probably what you have as it's not a pressure area, and don't worry about it much.
They are externally oiled engines btw

Good idea to spray Allen bolts with some PB Blaster or equivalent. It makes the job easier. It's amazing how easy it is to strip those Allen bolts. I used the factory gaskets and covers. No issues.

Should I get new factory covers if mine are warped?
