3.6 conversion; Part one

Hi, I have found a 93 3.6 with head gaskets and 38,000 mile from Harald Julicher in Germany, He has it crated and should leave in a couple days when my money wire clears his bank, In sevearl post some have said that his english is so so, I called him and what a nice person and knows Porsche, and yes his english is real good, (besides calling me Scottish:D ) So we will waite and see when the crate arrives, i dont think i will be disapointed at least i hope not, I have a picture of the motor so ill post it. I have sold my motor and hope to get it out this week for its new owner. I am gonna post every picture i can from getting the crate to opening it for the first time to putting it, and pictures of taking the old motor out, lets see if a back yard mechanic can do this, So Harald may post pictures before it leaves germany if he has time, and I will post as we go, heres Haralds e-mail if you want to talk to him remember when its 12 here its like 8-9 at night there, automann@freenet.de , so let me know your thoughts on the project, Kevinhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/92er36bato2.jpg

Take lots of pictures, and document everything. This will make a great resource for people looking to do it in the future.

No engine seller has x-ray vision, of course, but I have yet to hear of anyone having a bad experience with Harald -- including myself.

Kevin Stewart 12-09-2002 07:02 PM

Jack i plan to take pictures of every step from removing old to uncrating the new, should be fun, I cant wait to see BB2, Kevin

dean 12-09-2002 07:12 PM

Hey Kevin,

Does Harold return your e-mails? He hasn't returned any of mine.

Kevin Stewart 12-09-2002 08:12 PM

Blown, are you shure you have the right e-mail, Harald has always returned my e-mails by noon the next day, I think he has been one of the most prompt people I have ever dealt with e-mail, try him again, i would use the e-mail I posted, i dont ever check my pelican e-mail, anyway, It seems strange that he wouldnt e-mail you back, Kevin

k9handler 12-09-2002 11:03 PM

I have to chime in for Harald here...
I went and seen one of his installs here in Germany a couple days ago, and all I have to say is PERFECTION!

Email him again, he will email you back I am sure...he is a very good guy to work with.:D

thrown_hammer 12-10-2002 02:46 AM

Kevin,
I can't wait to see your car with a 3.6 wedged in it. Now you will have some good stories about your car.;)
This spring we will have to do another "Northern Indiana Porsche Invasion" Ryan ended up with an early car for us to check out.

dean 12-10-2002 03:36 AM

I just e-mailed him again. I believe that was the address I used before. I just thought that he didn't have what I wanted so he didn't return my mail.

Thanks

I went to get my Digital camera only to find my daughter has swiped the batteries for her cd player, I had a couple pictures left in an instant so here goes and ill get some batteries for better pictures next time. The car hasnt moved since slamed seen it last and has not been started either, I didnt want to take off the nose or front spoiler so i decided to put the car on four rail road ties that about a foot and a half long, they have two by fours nailed on top and bottom so the car will not roll, I use them on the super late stock car, anyway i can jack the rear of the car even higher but the spoiler will not hit the ground, I thought the shifter coupler to the tranny was getting bad and was going to replace only to find it loose, I also disconnected the plate lights and removed the rear bumper, everything inside the engine bay is discounected, tomorrow night I plan to drain the oil and disconnect everything under the car and drop the motor, I had forgotten how easy these motors are to drop, so far i have about 1.5 hours in with most of the time going into break time :D , anyway here are a couple pictures, im sure slammed will be happy, still no news of when the 3.6 will arrive, I hope to have the info tomorrow, Kevinhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/porsche 3.6.jpg

kevin, i will be happy....my motor has been out since tuesday and is begging for the replacement. ordered a new clutch after finding mine was pretty well wore out so i have to wait for it to show up before i start on it anyway. i plan on taking the tin off and painting everything since my car has a new paint job.

makaio 12-15-2002 06:14 PM

Great to see you are going to document it all Kevin. I seriously have been contemplating dropping a 3.6 into the SC in the next year or so. I would just love to roll up to the track in my beat-up paint jobbed SC, and clean the clock of those vette's down the front straight of Thunderhill.

You guys just make it so tempting.;)

Kevin Stewart 12-15-2002 06:33 PM

Matt i really think this is going to be easier then we think, i sold my 3.0 to help pay for the 3.6 also Harald from germany is helping me with as many parts as possible, everything is going well just waiting on the info for when the motor will arrive. The two issues at this time is where to cut the engine tin, and the wiring, i think im gonna send my motor mount out of the old motor in and have it updated, I am also not gonna change the bottom pulley, i do plan to put the a/c back in and i have read several places that the bottom pulley does some balancing of the motor, if your near Indiana come take a look, Kevin

Kevin Stewart 12-15-2002 06:35 PM

Matt sorry just noticed you are in california, Kevin

Man, I really like that silver. Looks great.

old_skul 12-16-2002 05:52 AM

Pardon me for being nosy, but how much is Harald getting for a decent 3.6, shipped to the US?

This would give us dreamers a little dose of reality...

Kevin Stewart 12-16-2002 07:39 AM

I think you can buy an early motor for 5000-6000, i chose a head gasket motor so i paid more, plus the miles are supposed to be lower, i do think i saved considerably over buying in the states, i did price engines here, Kevin

Kevin Stewart 12-16-2002 07:42 AM

update, the motor is suppsed to be in tuesday, anyone in the midwest wanna help me load it give a e-mail, I plan to take pictures as I go, Kevin

pbs911 12-16-2002 07:50 AM

Kevin, are you going with Dr. Timmons 3.6 conversion kit? My understanding is the kit comes with pre-fabed engine tin, a reinforced motor cross-member, and a few other items that seem to make the swap easier.

Kevin Stewart 12-16-2002 07:53 AM

I am not sure who I am buying the kit from yet, I have some of the parts, so when I get the motor im gonna take an inventory and deicide from there, Kevin

thrown_hammer 12-16-2002 07:55 AM

Where and when are you loading? I may be available.

rfix'n 12-16-2002 08:02 AM

In the midst of a conversion myself although I do not have my motor yet and have mostly done cleanup work to this point.

What do you plan on doing about oil cooling? How about exhaust? These seem to be the two most expensive things to solve for our SC's.

Kevin Stewart 12-16-2002 08:20 AM

I am really not sure about the exhaust, i have been looking for a set of ssi heat exchangers like bb, when I get the motor we are gonna slide it up to the tranny and see what the problem is, If I can alter the exhaust i will untill i find a reasonable priced set of headers/heat exchangers, I am taking a different approach to cooling, I have the c2 nose so i have more room, I race stock cars so i have friends that work at or own race shops, the plan is to use a hot rod oil cooler with thermastat and fan, I have already seen a couple that will work and the price is about half a part made for a Porsche, I have a trombone oil cooler and its not enough, but the hoses go all the way to the front and you can buy adapter fittings, I may end up running braided lines all the way, these two things seem to be where the second biggest expense is, I will post pictures as we go, I dont have a open ended budget for this project if i wanna race my stock car this summer, so im taking it a step at a time, but i plan on having it running by feburary, the idea is this car will return to my daily summer driver, Kevin

Jack Olsen 12-16-2002 09:00 AM

Just for the record, I don't run SSI's.

I have B&B headers.

Kevin Stewart 12-16-2002 09:12 AM

Jack, sorry it was supposed to be b&b not bb as in your car, in a hury typing, anyway do you have headers or headers with heat, in Indiana I gotta have heat or ill only drive it 5 months a year, as always thanks for your input, any ideas are welcome, Kevin

widebody911 12-16-2002 10:05 AM

I'm using B&B headers w/heater boxes, and a repro RS heater bypass and have good heat. We get down into the high 30's, low 40's here, but I still drive around in shorts.
