Air cleaner box hole on bottom?
Hi all.
I have a 81 SC running very bad when cold. It gets better when hot. Right now I am changing all intake gaskets, injector seals and guides, and connector boots to filter housing. I have filter housing out of car and have noticed a small port on the very bottom of the filter housing, it is in the center back, about 1/4'' hole. Is this a water moisture drain, or is something supposed to connect to it? Also how in the world would i check cold start injector spray with engine installed? Put a mirror back there and work off of that? Thanks Matt |

On the earlier cars it was for a hose connection and oil drain from fumes coming off the tank.
By 78 the oil system for fumes was closed and fumes burned. That's why your engine stumbles with oil cap removed. Bruce |

You can leave the drain open, although it's letting air into the engine post-filter. I plugged mine and it made no difference in operation that I could tell.
The CSV gives the engine a really short burst of fuel at startup when cold. There's a bench test for it, but I'm not sure you can check it in situ very easily. But if you can turn the engine over and it just runs rough for a while until warm up then it's probably something else, perhaps a WUR or AAR issue. Since you have your CIS apart, be SURE and check your airbox, mine had a small visible crack between the upper and lower halves. After I sealed it up I pressure tested the box and it was still leaking along the seam although no crack was visible. There are dozens and dozens of cold start threads and cold start issues. Can you be more specific as to the symptoms and maybe me or someone else can offer more help?
