+1, was just going to ask that. one of the issues with solid models is they can be hard to work with, and editing can be a big challenge.

What I find interesting about this is being able to pull critical dimensions, and planes for designing parts that mount on complex objects such as a modern AC compressor that needs a mount that bolts to several places on the engine, ITB linkage mounts, ITB manifolds etc.

For the fun of it I do work in SolidWorks for 3D printing of scale model parts (+/- 0.05mm). I have often wondered about scaling this up for true automotive restoration work. I'd be willing to draw up a part and see how this could work with CNC. I'd also be curious for 3D printing of plastic parts. I use a service that produces prototypes for companies so the resolution is exact and there's no layering effect like the current desktop printers have.
