Insuring A Teenage Driver - Need Tips
My dad let me drive his 911 when I was sixteen, and I am set to pass on the goodwill to my oldest. However, my current classic car insurance requires drivers be 18, so I'm looking for ideas on coverage options. Maybe its best to simply tack the car onto our daily driver policy, but someone here may have a better idea.
Car is an '87 Targa if if makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any input. |

What timing! I just called my regular insurance company today because I have a 16-year-old that just got her driver's license.
I have two policies: a regular policy for 3 daily drivers (mine, wife's & now daughter's) and a collector car policy on the 911. Adding a 16-year-old before any discounts made my premium go up $2000/year. ![]() The 'good grades' and basic driver's ed discounts reduced the premium to $1600/year. Last year I sent my daughter to tirerack.com Street Survival (streetsurvival.org). A local State Farm rep was one of the sponsors. He said State Farm gave a 50% discount for: 1) good grades (3.0 or greater GPA) 2) basic driver's ed and 3) attending Street Survival. My current insurer had never heard of Street Survival -- they are looking into it and said they would call me back and let me know if I was eligible for any additional discount. Maybe you could look into something like Street Survival and call your insurance company to see if they offer a discount for it. ![]() I'm hoping for some good news from my current insurer -- if not I might be shopping around for insurance again. I'm frankly surprised that any collector policy would insure an 18-year-old. One of the local guys had a terrible time getting insurance for his 911 until he turned 24. Hey, if anyone finds out any other tips, I'm all ears! ![]()

Just for the heck of it call hagerty.
I've had them for 8 years and always thought the 25yo or older to drive applied, but my 22 yo deserves to see what it's like to drive one of these fine cars.I called them and they said in fact he can drive it under my direction, permission, including alone from what I understood. I'm not at that point of solo. But regardless of being much younger, it couldnt hurt to ask. Let us know what you find out.
