Rubber Hood Strap Question

I am about to install the RS rubber hood straps on my car and have noticed in photos that they are installed in different orientations at times. There are nubs that are located in the middle of the straps that are sometimes facing outward and sometimes facing inward.

What is the proper way to install them?

Below is a couple of pictures I acquired for reference and are not my cars. Tough to see but notice the difference in orientation.

Thanks for your help.

This Brumos car is a real (I think). Looks like the screws for the lower piece go under the rubber trim at the top of the bumper. Never seen them installed with the t-pull facing down. However, they DO get installed with the "T" pulling down in the rear.

Not really, at least how they were installed by Porsche. I can think of just one car, the Gerard Larrousse 911R, that had a single front strap installed the other way.

Pop rivets are not very strong. If you are going to use a rivet, use one with a much higher strength. Steel, captures the mandrel, etc...

If installing these in a fiberglass hood, put a decent-sized backing plate on the back side.

I agree, use a backing plate and stainless screws and perhaps counter sunk stainless t-nuts. I am not crazy about the rigidity of the top of my glass front bumper to begin with, so it is getting some steel to beef it up.

Interesting, I thought riveting was the way to go. I do have a steel bumper and steel hood, am I better off with screws?

Even though Joe Bob thinks the rubber straps are upside down in the photos and no one else agrees, we all agree "nubs" go facing inward, correct?

Thanks.

Rivets are okay, if you use the right ones. They come in a bunch of different types, materials, sizes, etc. There are some that are quite strong, but they also must be sized and installed correctly.

You specified pop rivets. That can mean two things. POP brand rivets, or generic hardware store rivets, which is how most people use the term. What you might find in your hardware store is a 1/8" aluminum rivet that does not retain it's mandrel and has very low strength.

Do a search on rivets and learn a little about them. There's a ton of info out there and it's quicker to do a search than for me to type the rest of the afternoon. Then, buy something appropriate for what you are going to do, size them correctly and install them with a good tool. You should be fine.

EDIT: If you are planning to install the rubber straps on your SC pictured in your garage, you have 964 bumpers on that car, which will present a challenge. If the parts are factory, you have a plastic bumper over a metal bumper support and there is probably a space between the two parts. Rivets won't be a good solution there, you'll want to use bolts, plus some spacers between the bumper skin support, if there is any space between them.

javadog,

Thanks for the information.

I have backdated my car recently and the pictures in my garage do not reflect that yet. This is a picture of my car as of last week.

In that case, rivets would be fine, as long as you pick the right ones and install them correctly.

The nubs go INSIDE. Always.

And use rivets to attach them. On a FG bumper (as I did mine), put a thin metal backing plate on the underside of the bumper to sandwich the fiberglass, which is weak and can crush and splinter over time due to stress.

Thanks! It was very simple to put them on once I got the nerve to drill the holes in the hood and bumper.
I agree, it is a sickness.
