De-flaring a 1967 | Recommendation for body work in greater Orange County CA area
Note - cross-post with 912bbs since I have a bit of time pressure.
I just picked up this project. She is a 1967 that a prior owner flared her rear fenders on and I am intending on returning them to the narrow original panels. I do not expect that to be easy, cheap, nor fast. It looks to me like I am basically looking at replacing both rear quarter panels, is that right? The passenger side fit looks off, hopefully that is just the fender not the wheel / axle etc. I believe I will also need to replace the lower rear valance as it is sized for the flares. Any been there / done that coaching for me? Any recommendations on a shop in Orange County who knows these cars and does good work? Thanks! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Can't help you with a body shop but that is what it looks like when a hack puts SC quarters on an SWB car and doesn't use longer trailing arms.... good for you for putting it back!

Ah, so that explains why the wheel well / wheel location is off. The later fenders that were put on are for a long wheelbase car which locates the wheels back further.

PM Sent - I have been working with a guy for the past 20+ years that does this work as a hobby out of his home. He's done a few bare metal repaints and plenty of body and paint work on my old Porsches and hobby cars.

Had a nice conversation with John, seems like a really good guy to work with. Open for ideas, so thanks for the private message. I also Brewster as they have been great to work with.

Hi guys, the car is going to be John's shop. Stopped by to see him today, neat guy and lots of early 911s in for surgery.
I can ask about the roof rack, kind of cool if you ask me.

I see this a lot on SWB cars that have been flared. Back when these cars were very cheap, I honestly don't think a lot of owners and body shops knew the '68 and older 911/912s had a shorter wheelbase! They put all that time and money into fitting and welding new flared rear quarters, with the wheels off of course. Imagine the DOH! feeling they had when they put the wheels on and realized their mistake! Likely why this project was given up on. At least they didn't paint it before realizing the problem like some I've seen!

The cut lines are slightly below where my finger is pointing. John is cautiously optimistic that we can work off some spare panels he has and isolate the repairs to that specific area. I could use some luck there since I am feeling distinctly unlucky on the driver side sill. If you haven't been there stepping into John's shop is an experience (good one). ![]()
