Ball Joint Lock plate

So I was putting my control arms on the car after rebuilding them with new bushings and ball joints and some how the lockpin/plate with the little plate that's spot welded onto the ball joints fell off. Anyone encounter this problem and does anyone have an alternative to locking the retaining nut in place?

If you ordered it from PP, order another one and return this one, once you get it. I wouldn't suggest hacking a ball joint, too important!

I'm not sure that's an option at this point since everything is installed.

I think it is. Joint seems like defective part, eligible for return. Call PP and ask them what they will do for you, if that's where you bought it. You could leave it on for a while and drive the car a limited amount (not hard) while you wait for the new part.

In general, no matter what you do, I think you should not use that joint, so you should go about ordering a replacement anyway, and hopefully you'll get some money back for that one you have.

Or if you have the retainer clip, you could try to weld it back on. I'd get a competent welder to do it, though.

No-one will like this idea but do you "really" think that the tiny cotter pin and flimsy bent metal star washer thing actually does anything. With all the threads about the hell to remove a ball joint, its never about that weird almost nothing locking stuff saving the joint from falling off.
Once you have that thing torqued, it ain't coming off.

If that little clip hadn't failed, it would be holding your ball joint on, really !

Inclined to agree with Jesse16. However, I don't think the thing would be on there if it didn't have a purpose. Maybe it's there in case someone forgets to torque the nut?? Even as flimsy as it is, it would tend to keep the nut from being able to unscrew itself - since in order to get unthreaded it would need to push downward, and the washer would probably be able to do that.

I'm thinking about applying a small tack weld to the control arm and the nut for the ball joint that would be easily accessible during the next removal. In that case I would have to replace the nut next time around which is not a big deal

I just installed new ball joints and am yet to torque that bugger of a nut. The clip is probably not important but I also figure a manufacture doesn't add things to the cars because it's nice to have. Just get another one as changing it out isn't really that tough - except for getting the nut off and back on....

Mark.
