Passing Emissions Test with SSI's and no O2?

While I'm over here defending freedom (and fighting tooth decay:D ), my Porsche is being watched over by Dad. He drives it every so often to keep the cobwebs out.
This month it is up for it's biannual Colorado emissions check. The car has SSI's and no O2 sensor in place.
He took it in to a small emissions shop where the guy looked under the car for the visual inspection and then ( ;) wink wink) said "yep, its all there".
But the car didn't pass on the tailpipe test.
What is the likelihood that if I have him lean out the mixture that it will pass without the Cat?

The only other solution is to have him pull my box of stock exhaust parts out of storage and start boltin', or to just let it sit until I get back in another year or so.

Emissions Test

Try to find out what the accetable O2 limit is for your state. In Georgia the max is about 2.2% You should be able to lean out the mixture to 2% or slightly less without giving up much in performance. If that won't do the trick, see if an exhaust shop can weld a fitting on the left exhaust and install an oxygen sensor. That should bring you well into the acceptable limits.

Good Luck

You can lean it and it will pass. BUT most states have a waiver program for those serving in the armed services....

Thanks Mike....maybe that will be my loophole.

I have a 82 SC with SSI's and a sport muffler. I had the boss to accept the O2 sensor welded in and conected and the car would not pass. I was able to lean the mixture down and it finally passed.
The tech did a visual for the cat and asked where it was. Told him I didn't know anything about the car, it sits exactly as I bought it. I opened the drivers door and pointed to the Porsche sticker that stated that the car was equipped with a cat. Told him it was probably built into the muffler as it didn't look like there was much room down there. He looked at me kind of funny but the car passed. ;)

Yep I recall when I got the car inspected at first, over 2 years ago. They guy did look around for the CAT and O2 (which were there at that time) and then gave up after about 30 seconds.
I confirmed with a hearty nod and said "its all stock". He took my 911 to the same shop this time and apparently nothing changed.

I've got that spot for the O2 sensor on the SSI's, I just had a Nissan drainplug filling the space. Could have him put one in there if need be.

Thanks!
Nick

Oh yeah....took my SSI equipped 3.0 to a non P-car smog shop....told him that they were dual cats. He didn't choke on his coffee or anything....:D
