Clutch issue

When the gentleman that did my engine rebuild had everything apart we decided to do the clutch "while we were in there". He suggested and used a turbo clutch for replacement.

Please forgive my ignorance as I try to describe my issue: When depressing the clutch pedal, the gear engages/disengages at the top maybe inch of depression. In other words, there is no gradual engagement as the pedal is depressed during the "throw" of pedal movement.

Suggestions? At the moment we (new mechanic) are discussing putting in the normal clutch kit for this car.

Thanks
