MSD Ignition for 3.0L?
I'd recently sold the engine from my track car ('72 2.4S) along with the Bosch ignition. Now I have a 3.0 L SC engine but need a new ignition. Thinking of going with an MSD but will anyone work? Such as a 5520 or a 6420? I'm not sure what the difference is. Any suggestions? Also, will I need anything else to make it work? Non-stock coil?
Thanks, Bob |
The MSD Streetfire seems to be a good low cost option along with their High Vibration Blaster II coil and a non resistor rotor. All in around $200 for those items if you shop well.

6AL. has built in rev limiter
get a non resistor rotor ran this in my 77 and now on my 930 |
I have to put in a mention for the CDI that I have had in my 1973 for 6-7 years. Daytona-Sensors CD1. Comes with matching coil, rev limiting, data collection, advance curves......and very strong output. Well built and very reliable.
Mil-spec design and circuit boards. Our hosts can get it for you. I have had a great experience with this system and many many miles. Daytona Sensors LLC - CD-1 Capacitive Discharge Ignition System for Racing |
My carb'd SC uses MSD digital 6AL #6425 for about 4 years now without a problem. I am also using their Blaster coil.
|
Whichever one you pick, get the newer version with the plug. This way if you have to replace it, all you have to do is unplug it verses disconnecting wires.
|
If you'd prefer 'plug and play', original fitment and looks but also get the benefit of a dual spark system and many unique features( tach calibration and smoothing, soft and hard limiters, launch control) you could choose our CDI+.

OK. Lots of great info and just what I was looking for. Some of the stuff, to advance/elaborate for my simple track car that gets' very little use lately.
I found this: "MSD 9956 Ignition Kit 6425 Digital 6AL Ignition Box with 8207 Blaster SS Coil". It's in the $290. range. It's not the same coil as stated above but (should work?). Thanks, Bob |
I went with a MSD 6530 digital programmable and locked my distributor out. Not hard to do at all and allows you to program your own curve.

I looked up the MSD 6530 since it's sounds more desirable for a 3.0L power curve. But, I have to think budget and "when" I will ever get this car to the track again.
I'm thinking I'm going with the MSD 6425 6AL Ignition with 8207 Blaster SS Coil. I'm guessing, this coil will work OK? Thanks! |
I'd recommend the MSD 8222 Blaster II high vibration coil if mounting it on the engine in the original location. It's $55 most places.
Mine has worked flawlessly for the past 5 years. If mounting it on the body by the fuse panel, then any coil will do. |

I use the MSD streetfire (close to the Bosch CDI in output but more and the double spark below 3k rpm) with a programmable rpm limiter. It also fits in the same spot. So inexpensive I bought two and have a spare ...less than 300 bucks for the two. |
Thanks Timmy2. You just saved me a few bucks. I found the ignition and Blaster SS coil for around $50 cheaper than my original pair. I will order it tonight (giving me 8 hours to avoid an impulse buy). Good info from Reiver. And not expensive.
Thanks all for the input...... |
