1973T Generator Questions
 

Hello, I rescued a 1973 from a slow death. Had not run in 8 years. I got it running and driving. The last big problem is that the generator light is on and it is obvious that it is not charging.
My question is what is the next step? Are there things I need to test? Do I just replace the generator? What generator would it be best to use in that car? I guess the regulator needs to be replaced (?) Does anyone rebuild or just replace?

I would start with the remote mounted voltage regulator first.
It is what tells the alternator what to do. (charge or not)
It is on the rear fuse panel .

Lots of experience with alternators on this board.

If the VR replacement doesn't do it have your batteries checked to see if they hold a charge, may have to replace them depending on their age.

Next, check the tension on the fan belt; it shouldn't depress more than 1/4"; if it does you will need to move the shims located on the pulley behind the large nut in the center.

If all that fails, you'll probably have to have the alternator rebuilt. People on this board recommend that over purchasing a new one because of quality issues.

BUT, BEFORE you do all of this, purchase Wayne Dempsey's book "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911". It's the bible and very inexpensive, full of steps and color photos.

Unless the alternator has been replaced at some point with one with an internal VR.
Mine was on my 73.5 targa.

The old remote VR was still there, but disconnected.

I ordered it this morning. Does anyone know where I can get it rebuilt??

I don't know where you live but if in a large city most auto-electric shops can rebuild your alternator.

I live in a small burg and had to send my alternator to a place in Zanesville Ohio: Sagle Auto Electric, 200 West Monroe, Zanesville, OH 73701, tel 740-454-1371. Call them first. I had good luck with them and they stand behind their work.
